The Lions waiving Starling Thomas V is one of the most surprising Lions cuts in a roster cutdown in an August or early September, in many decades. I thought Thomas had at or around an 80% chance of surviving the cutdown to 53.

I don't agree with the Lions brass decision to waive Thomas, exposing him to waivers.

I think there's over a 50% chance Thomas will be claimed off waivers. Probably, somewhere around 53 %. Combining this with Thomas' Special Teams play, in which he made a huge positive impact in the pre-season, Special Teams potential, and potential as an NFL CB, exposing Thomas to waivers is the roster subtraction decision I disagree with the most through this point in time in the 3 seasons of the Brad Holmes-Dan Campbell regime.

Even factoring in Starling Thomas V continuing to commit infractions in pass coverage that will often result in penalties, I think it was a major mistake taking the risk of exposing Thomas to waivers. A team like the Arizona Cardinals, that's clearly rebuilding, has much more to gain by claiming Thomas off waivers, than the opportunity cost of using a roster spot on him.
