Which Lions offensive players are locks to make the final 53-man roster?
.........
A lock to make an NFL Roster, either through the cutdown to 53, or the regular season opening day roster, is a 100% chance, barring a substantial injury.
Regarding Jeff Risdon's take, I agree regarding the QBs and RBs.
With Denzel Mims now on the Lions roster, the only WR Lock is Amon-Ra St. Brown. With, Jameson Williams on the Lions roster, soon after his 6 game NFL suspension ends.
Sam Laporta is the only Lions TE lock.
Frank Ragnow, Penei Sewell, Taylor Decker, and Jonah Jackson are the only Offensive Line locks for the Lions.

Which Lions defensive players are roster locks?
..........
Derrick Barnes is very likely going to be on the Lions opening day roster, barring a major injury. Yet, I wouldn't consider him a 100% lock.
Otherwise, I agree with Jeff Risdon's assessments in this article.
Since the article was written, the Lions released K Michael Badgley.

Updated Lions 53-man roster projection after two weeks of training camp
...........
IMHO, the most likely outcome regarding Hendon Hooker is he's placed on the Lions Regular Season NFI list. Then at some point during regular season, the Lions evaluate Hooker during the 21 day practice window, before deciding whether to active him to the 53 man roster, or keep him on the NFI list for the season. When the dust settles, barring an injury setback, I think Hooker will be on the Lions 53 man roster sometime during the regular season.
I agree with Jeff Risdon's RB and TE roster assessment.
Unless the NFL changed the procedure, players suspended by the NFL for at least the beginning of the regular season don't have to be included on a team's initial 53 Man Roster.
www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/browns-put-deshaun-watson-on-suspended-list-set-53-man-roster
Denzel Mims, AntoIne Green, and Dylan Drummond are all currently in the mix for 1 or 2 WR roster spots.
Barring a significant injury, Colby Sorsdal will very likely be on the Lions 53 man roster, following the cutdown to 53. Otherwise, the Lions backup Offensive Line situation is uncertain. A lot can change from today to the day the Cutdown to 53 decisions will be sent in to the NFL.
Levi Onwuzurike likely won't be exposed to waivers, unless he struggles for the most part in the pre-season. Some team would probably claim him off waivers to assess him.
Julian Okwara definitely needs to step up, especially in the pre-season to survive the cutdown to 53.
Anthony Pittman probably would clear waivers, hence much like last summer, I think the Lions would be comfortable exposing him to waivers.
Trevor Nowaske is an x-factor at this time. The pre-season will go a long way in how the Lions proceed with him.
Cam Sutton, Jerry Jacobs, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Will Harris, Tracy Walker, Kerby Joseph, and Brian Branch will be on the 53 man roster, barring the injury factor moving forward. Between 2 and 5 other DBs should be on the Lions initial 53 man roster. Probably, not as many as 5. The joint practices with the Giants and Jaguars, and the 3 pre-season games, likely will determine how the Lions proceed in the Secondary.
I still believe the Lions will begin the season with Riley Patterson as the team's Kicker. I think the Lions will go with Jake McQuaide as LS, unless Scott Daly has become much more consistent/ reliable as LS.

Detroit Lions 53-man roster projection 1.0
.........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions 21, Giants 16: Pre-Season Game # 1 (2023)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1848/lions-giants-season-game-2023
I agree with the QB assessment.
The article confirms that Craig Reynolds is dealing with an injury. As a result, the Lions # 3 RB spot has much more uncertainty. , Whether the Lions will keep a 4th RB on the initial 53 man roster (not counting FB Jason Cabinda) will likely depend greatly on what transpires the next two weeks. Right now, I agree with Kyle Meinke on his RB projections.
Marvin Jones will probably survive the Cutdown to 53 but he's not a lock.
The 5th and a possible 6th WR spot are up for grabs. Availability in practice and the remaining pre-season games will probably be huge for the chances of the WRs fighting for roster spots.
Dylan Drummond wasn't helped by the play of Nate Sudfeld. I think Drummond still has a very realistic chance of surviving the Cutdown.
Colby Sorsdal has at least a good chance of surviving the cutdown to 53. But the Giants pre-season games reflects that he's a long way from being ready to be counted on in a regular season game at Guard.
The Matt Nelson vs. the Giants on Friday Night doesn't belong on the Lions 53 man roster.
Benito Jones was in the game on Defense either on the first or second Lions Defensive play. I thought Jones helped his cause in this game, though the Lions depth on the interior Defensive Line, clearly puts him on the roster bubble.
Julian Okwara belongs on the Lions 53 man roster but he or his brother Romeo could get caught in a number's game.
It makes sense at this time to go with last season's plan/ course of action: Release Anthony Pittman, then offer him a Practice Squad contract if he's not claimed off waivers ( I don't think he will be claimed). Then elevate Pittman from the Practice Squad in the early games. Then after Game 3, when Pittman's elevation eligibility is used up, make room for him on the 53 man roster, if there's a viable opening. If there's an opening before Game 3, sign Pittman to the 53 man roster.
Regarding the Secondary, so much depends on whether the Lions brass/ medical staff believes Emmanuel Moseley will be ready for game action early in the regular season.
CB Steven Gilmore helped his cause against the Giants in the pre-season opener. Khalil Dorsey played well but will likely have to go the Practice Squad Route again in his NFL career.
Other than Chase Lucas, I thought all of the Lions DBs listed as OUT in Kyle Meinke's roster projections had favorable performances in the pre-season opener. Tae Hayes was already released, despite a good performance.
I agree regarding the Specialists projections.

Updated 53-man roster projection after the Lions 2nd preseason game
............
This thread relates to the following thread:
Jaguars 25, Lions 7: Pre-Season Game # 2 (2023)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1853/jaguars-lions-season-game-2023
The Lions greatest roster uncertainties at this time appear to be as follows in no particular order:
1. Whether the Lions keep a 4th Halfback. Right now, I agree with Jeff Risdon, in that it doesn't pay for the Lions to keep a 4th Halfback, based on no one has jumped out.
2. Will the Lions go with 5 or 6 WRs and which WR (s) behind the Big 4? Much like with the RB depth, no one has jumped out at WR.
3. Will the Lions go with 8,9, or 10 Offensive Line? And which ones behind the Big 6. Colby Sorsdal will probably be on the Lions initial 53 man roster and 53 man opening day roster. But I don't think he's a lock. Sorsdal looks like he's not close to being ready to be a fill in on the Offensive Line in the regular season. Germain Ifedi has helped his roster cause in the 2 pre-season games. Right now, I think Ifedi will be with the Lions on the 53 man opening day roster.
4.Will the Lions keep 6 or 7 Edge players on Defense? If it's 6, Romeo Okwara appears to have moved ahead of his younger brother Julian.
5. Will the Lions keep 4 or 5 DTs? Levi Onwuzurike, Benito Jones, and Christian Covington appear to be in a battle for one or two DT roster spots. With Covington probably behind the other
6. Will the Lions keep 5 or 6 Off the Ball LBs to begin the season? I'm confident at this time that Jalen Reeves-Maybin will be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster. More likely than not, Anthony Pittman will be released, go unclaimed off waivers, sign a Practice Squad Contract, and be elevated from the P.S. for 1 to 3 games early season games.
7. Beyond the Big 7 in the Secondary, will the Lions keep 2, 3, or 4 additional DBs? Steven Gilmore, Chase Lucas, Ifeatu Melifonwu ,Saivion Smith, and Brady Breeze all seem on the Roster Bubble. The health of Melifonwu and Smith could be the difference in whether one or both of them survive the initial cutdown to 53. One of them could be a candidate for Short Term IR, being placed on IR sometime after the initial 53 man roster is set.

Detroit Lions 53-man roster prediction: GM Brad Holmes might have something coming
..........
A reason Nate Sudfeld has a chance of surviving the cutdown to 53 and being on the Lions opening day 53 is not enough players on the bubble on the Offensive Side of the ball on Offense have made a strong case to be on the Lions 53 man roster. Sudfeld hasn't either. But the importance of the QB position might be enough to keep him off the waiver wire in the next couple of weeks. It's a close call.
Being that Benny Snell was unsigned until early this month, unless he lights it up at Carolina, it would make sense to release him. With the plan of Snell being signed to the Practice Squad and elevated to the Game Day roster 1 to 3 times.
Dylan Drummond has a better chance of being claimed off waivers than any of the other Lions WRs beyond the Big 4. Having said that, the chances of Drummond being claimed, if released, are less than they were before the Jaguars pre-season game.
I think it would make more sense to expose Anthony Pittman to waivers than exposing Benito Jones to waivers. The Lions claimed Jones off waivers from the Dolphins following the cutdown to 53. Jones improved noticeably as last season moved along and has made a pretty good case this summer to be on the 53 man roster when the regular season begins this year.

Projecting the Detroit Lions’ 53-man roster heading into the preseason finale
........
At this point in time, from my point of view, Antoine Green hasn't done enough, including in the first 2 pre-season games, to be claimed off waivers. Green was a high 7th Round Pick. If Green was drafted somewhat earlier in the draft, I think there would be a much greater chance he would be claimed off waivers.

5 hardest decisions to project from the Lions 53-man roster cutdown
...........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions at Panthers preview: Pre-Season Game # 3 ( 2023)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1855/lions-panthers-preview-season-game
The decision on whether to keep one or both of the Okwara Brothers is from my point of view the most difficult decision mentioned in the article. If it was my decision, barring a good trade offer, which is unlikely, I would keep both.
Steven Gilmore is my Lions preference over Chase Lucas, if a decision comes down to the two of them. I think Gilmore has more upside and is arguably the better player at present.
If the Lions cut the RB position down to 2 and/or the WR position down to 4, in order to give the Lions more flexibility for Short Term IR moves, before adding back to RB and/ or WR, I'm more than comfortable with that path.

Lions 26, Panthers 17: Pre-Season Game # 3 (2023)

The following is my UPDATED annual Lions percentage chances of players surviving the cutdown to 53 players. This edition is AFTER the Lions-Panthers pre-season game at Carolina. I'm not factoring in unreported injuries.
I didn't list any player 50%, as I want to differentiate who I project to survive the cutdown.
QB (2)
1. Jared Goff 100 % 2. Teddy Bridgewater 99 % 3. Nate Sudfeld 49 % (The severity of Nate Sudfeld's injury that he suffered at Carolina in the pre-season finale could easily be the determining factor in how the Lions proceed with him. Without knowing the extent of the injury, it's extremely difficult to predict what will happen with Sudfeld. Long Term IR and Short Term IR are in essence the possible outcomes, unless the injury is expected only to keep him out 2 or 3 weeks at most. My guess is the injury is more severe than that. 4. Adrian Martinez 2 % 5. Hendon Hooker 1 % *** Almost certainly will be placed on the Regular Season NFI list.
RB (4)
1. Jahmyr Gibbs 100 % 2. David Montgomery 100 % 3 Craig Reynolds 82 % 4. Jason Cabinda 51 % (As a Vested Veteran, he could be released and re-signed later in the week). 5. Benny Snell 48 % ( As a Vested Veteran, he could be released and re-signed later in the week). 6. Devine Ozigbo 47 % 7. Jermar Jefferson 34 %
WR (6)
1. Amon-Ra St. Brown 100 % 2. Kalif Raymond 100 % 3. Josh Reynolds 100 % 4. Marvin Jones 95 % 5. Dylan Drummond 56 % 6 Antoine Green 52 % (Short Term IR seems like a very realistic possibility). 7, Chad Cota 47 % 8. Trinity Benson 47 % 9. Maurice Alexander 39 % 10.Jason Moore 5 % 11. Avery Davis 1 %
Jameson Williams will be placed on the NFL Suspended List for the first 6 games.
TE. (3)
1 Sam Laporta 100 % 2. Brock Wright 98 % 3. James Mitchell 97 % 4 Darrell Daniels 49 % (As a Vested Veteran, he could be released, and re-signed later in the week). 5 Daniel Helm 5 %
Offensive Lineman (9)
1. Taylor Decker 100 % 2. Jonah Jackson 100 % 3. Frank Ragnow 100 % 4. Penei Sewell 100 % 5. Halapoulivaati Vaitai 95 % 6. Colby Sorsdal 97 % 7. Graham Glasgow 95 % 8. Kayode Awosika 53 % 9. Defensive Lineman / Edge (10)
1.Aidan Hutchinson 100 % 2.Alim McNeill 100 % 3.John Cominsky 100 % 4,Josh Paschal 100 % 5.Broderic Martin 100 % 6 Charles Harris 99 % 7.James Houston 99 % 8 Levi Onwuzurike 97 % 9 Isaiah Buggs 97 % 10.Julian Okwara 51 % ( A likely injury could easily lead to him surviving the cutdown, with the plan of putting him on Short Term IR). 11 Romeo Okwara 49 % ( As a Vested Veteran, he could be released, and re-signed later in the week). 12.Benito Jones 49 % 13,Christian Covington 44 % (Was already released. 44% was my before the game estimate). 14.Cory Durden 43 % 15.Chris Smith 5 %
I think the most likely outcome regarding the Lions Defensive Lineman/ Edge Players is Romeo Okwara will be released, with the plan of the Lions re-signing him later in the week. With his younger brother Julian Okwara then going on Short Term IR. If Romeo Okwara's contract makes this an inefficient Salary Cap strategy, then another vested veteran would be released, with the plan of re-signing him later in the week. I think Romeo Okwara will be on the Lions opening day 53 man roster.
LB (5)
1. Jack Campbell 100 % 2. Alex Anzalone 100 % 3. Derrick Barnes 100 % 4. Malcolm Rodriquez 100% 5. Jalen Reeves-Maybin 83 % ( As a Vested Veteran, he could be released, and re-signed later in the week). 6. Anthony Pittman 49 % 7. Trevor Nowaske 48 %
DB (11) 1. Cam Sutton 100% (CB) 2 CJ Gardner-Johnson 100 % (S-CB) 3. Brian Branch 100 % (S-CB) 4. Kerby Joseph 100 % (S) .5.Jerry Jacobs 100% (CB) 6. Tracy Walker 96 % (S) 7. Being placed on IR after the initial cutdown to 53 is a very realistic possibility. 10. Deciphering Detroit Lions’ difficult decisions with our final 53-man roster projection
.............
The following thread relates to this thread:
Lions cut DT Christian Covington,T Germaine Ifedi,-11 others
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1863/lions-christian-covington-germaine-ifedi
I expressed the following in the Lions 26, Panthers 17: Pre-Season Game # 3 (2023) thread:
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1862/lions-panthers-season-game-2023
If the team brass believes that Hendon Hooker would be cleared to practice during the season, with the expectation that Hooker would be cleared to be activated to the 53 man roster, that would likely increase the chances of Nate Sudfeld NOT being on the Lions initial 53 man roster. I think I substantially overestimated the chances of Sudfeld being on the Lions initial 53 man roster. Instead of 49%, it's probably around 30%.
Darrell Daniels will probably remain with the Lions one way or another. Daniels definitely looks like the Lions best run blocker by a sizable margin.
If the salary cap cost of releasing Romeo Okwara (even if the plan is to re-sign him later in the week) is greater than keeping him on the roster with his current contract, then the Lions very likely will release another vested veteran (with the plans on re-signing him later this week instead), if the Lions plan on placing at least one player on short term IR. Jason Cabinda comes to mind as someone who the Lions could very realistically use this path with. m Trevor Nowaske had a great Special Teams performance at Carolina in the pre-season finale. While the Lions probably will release Nowaske, with the plan of signing him to the Practice Squad if he clears waivers (he probably would but it's not a given), I think Nowaske could exceed Pittman as a Special Teams player this season, if given the opportunity.

Dave Birkett’s Detroit Lions 53-man roster prediction: See who is the surprise cut ......
This new thread relates to the following thread:
Lions QB Nate Sudfeld likely tore his ACL
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1864/lions-nate-sudfeld-tore-acl
With the Lions roster currently having around 22 or 23 players above the 53 man roster, the difficult decisions appear to be at WR, Defensive Line, Linebacker, and in the Secondary. With Antoine Green, Julian Okwara, and Khalil Dorsey being possible Short Term IR candidates, in addition to Ifeatu Melifonwu being a Short Term IR candidate, as many as 4 Vested Veterans could be released, and re-signed later in the week (or after the opening game in Kansas City). The Vested Veterans already released, headed by T Germaine Ifedi, are included in the list of Vested Veterans who could potentially be re-signed by the Lions. When the dust settles, my guess is one or two Vested Veterans will end up as having been released in the Cutdown to 53, and being re-signed sometime in the 2 weeks that follow.

Predicting the 22 remaining Detroit Lions roster cutdowns
........
What caught my attention is Jeff Risdon has DT-DE Cory Durden surviving the Cutdown to 53. Based on pre-season performance and potential, Durden probably deserves to survive the cut. But with Broderic Martin going to be on the Lions 53 man initial roster, and Benito Jones also included on the initial roster, Durden has a major uphill battle under the scenario of the Lions having 5 other DTs (not even counting Edge players that are expected to contribute inside in some expected passing situations). on the initial 53.
