I agree that the lack of a deep and deeper passing game severely limits the Lions Offense. The Vikings were defending the Lions Offense in some situations with the lead in the 4th QTR and even earlier that they wouldn't have against Matthew Stafford regardless whom his receivers were at the time. But in fairness to Jared Goff and Anthony Lynn, the Lions Offensive Tackles were overmatched pass protection and Quintez Cephes suffered the shoulder area injury late in the 2nd QTR on the Lions best 3rd down play of the game.

Time will tell if Jared Goff will be the Lions QB in a couple of years when expectations for the Lions are expected to be and hopefully are, much higher. To Goff's credit, I think he's a good QB to have for the Lions at least this season. The Lions have had an immense amount of injury and overall adversity already this season. Goff, along with Dan Campbell and his Coaching Staff have done a great job keeping the Lions battling. Granted, the Lions got off to a slow start on Defense against the Bears. And even though the Lions didn't score on Offense in the first half against the Bears, the Lions Offense looked crisp until getting inside the 10 yard line against a high quality Bears front 7. The Lions even ended up getting back into that game after being down 21-0 to the extent that it took an incomplete 4th and 1 pass relatively late in the 4th QTR to prevent a possible late Lions comeback. Going for and getting a relatively easy FG instead of the 4th and 1 decision in going for the 1st Down, would have changed the complexion of that game.

As you say, Goff could use more help from his line, the numbers are heavily in Vikings' favor : 
- Sacked : Goff 4 times , Cousins 2 times
- Hits : Goff 7 times, Cousins 2 times

And these stats include the longer routes by the Vikings and the frequent help that was provided against DEs Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen.

I'm not expecting Jared Goff to light the scoreboard up like Patrick Mahomes or Jared Allen. That much more with his current supporting cast on Offense.

What I am expecting is for Goff to at least take advantage of opportunities in games, when present, and make good decisions consistently.

This was Goff's worst game with the Lions. Another subpar performance similar to this game probably will understandably raise the question, should the Lions bench Goff?

The Lions have had worse half's of QB play in past seasons. That doesn't change the fact that Jared Goff had a bad first half performance vs. the Bengals and that he's certainly hasn't elevated the Lions Offense in the first half of the last 4 games. The Lions are averaging 1.5 points in the first half of the last 4 games! Even with all of the other Lions problems on Offense, a QB should be able to generate more points than 6 points in 4 first half's combined!

Jared Goff is in a very difficult spot for the Lions upcoming game at the LA Rams. The Rams have a much better team in the standings and on paper. That much more with the Lions having 14 players on IR, including several key starters. The game is in the road, in a dome stadium. As much as Goff needs to play much better, the same with his supporting cast on Offense. The mental/ lack of focus mistakes, have to be eliminated. That's something the Lions can control.

Jared Goff is never going to be Matthew Stafford, especially with a emphasis on vertical passing. In fairness to Goff, the Lions protection and availability / ability at WR has made it very difficult for the Lions to have repeated success throwing beyond the chains on 3rd Down and a sizable # of yards needed. Having said this, many self induced mistakes have occured to often on more vertical oriented passing plays and overall. The Lions must do a much better job taking advantage of opportunities.

With mostly good personal decisions and much better health, I think the Lions have the potential to make a huge tangible jump in the 2022 season.

At present though, wins will be hard to come by unless the Lions get a substantially better combination of WR play from a vertical standpoint and overall blocking.

I see noticeably more light with the Lions Defense than the Lions Offense. The margin of error for the Lions Offense in it's present form is low as any in the NFL this season. Every penalty and other mistake by the Lions is magnified as a result.

I understand why Jared Goff wanted to remain in the game and appreciate his toughness and overall leadership.

The evaluation that Jared Goff with his injury ( combined with the weather conditions ) was a better option than David Blough is what concerns me more than anything with this game.

With the Lions having another game in 8 days, it would make sense to keep Jared Goff out of team practice drills this week and the game in Cleveland. Then, assess where things stand after the Browns game.

If Jared Goff gets starter practice reps tomorrow and/ or Friday, it will be more difficult for Tim Boyle to be effective if called upon during the game. With Boyle returning to practice last week, he needs more practice reps than the type backup QB who has a very realistic chance of playing in the game that's coming up next ( in this case, the Browns game ). If Goff was playing at a winning level, then trying to get him ready to play in the game that's coming up next would probably be the right decision. Because Goff hasn't been playing well enough and is dealing with a significant injury that already kept him out of a practice, keeping him out of the remaining practices this week and the game is the decision the Lions should make.

The bottom line is the Lions Offense is amongst the worst in the NFL, if not the absolute worst. It's not likely that Anthony Lynn will be back with the Lions for the 2022 season. With Jared Goff's future with the Lions a huge question mark.

If Jared Goff is the planned starter, I think the Lions should have all 3 QBs on the GameDay roster. It's far from a given that Goff would be healthy enough to remain in the game as an effective QB.
