Carson Wentz deal shows just how well the Lions managed the Matthew Stafford trade
.........
Brad Holmes is off to a great start as Lions GM.
This looks like a good trade for the Colts from a trade compensation standpoint. They lessened their risk with the conditional elements of a 2nd Round 2022 Pick becoming a 1st Round pick.
From a player acquisition standpoint, this trade is a high risk / high reward trade for the Colts. Their season very likely rides on whether Frank Reich and Co. can get Carson Wentz's NFL playing career back on track.
With the pounding Wentz took with the Eagles in 2020, priority # 1 for the Colts should be adding the best possible veteran LT. Someone who will be expected to play at a high level, beginning with the first snap Wentz takes in a game.

Andrew Whitworth: Matthew Stafford has respect across NFL
.........
Because of salary cap constraints and limited draft resources, it's far from a given the LA Rams will have a good enough supporting cast around Matthew Stafford for them to be a prime Super Bowl contender. Not to mention the Rams coaching staff has plenty of change from the 2020 season.

.....
This unexpected good news might have turned out to be the difference in the LA Rams trading DT-DE Michael Brockers to the Lions for only a 7th Round Pick in 2023, compared to Brockers remaining on their roster. Great job by Brad Holmes with both trades!

Breaking down the full details of the Jared Goff-Matthew Stafford trade
.....
It's subjective what's more valuable for the Lions, an extra $2.5 million in salary cap space in 2021 or pick # 88 vs. pick # 101 ( or pick # 103 ) in the 2021 Draft.
If given the choice, I prefer the extra salary cap space. The Lions should (around a 65 % to 70 % chance ) to be able to get a player at # 101 ( or # 103 ) in the same cluster of players on the Lions Draft Board as what's available at # 88. The more significant downside is the lower 3rd Round Pick has a little less trade value.
The extra $ 2.5 million can be the difference on the Lions signing one or two Free Agents. A player ( s ) who could earn another contract from the Lions and be part of a potential long term solution for the Lions.

Matthew Stafford feels “reenergized” after move to Los Angeles
.......
One thing in particular that will help Matthew Stafford in adjusting to being the LA Rams starting QB is that Stafford and his family previous spent plenty of time in Southern California. They bought a house in Newport Coast, CA in the last two years. Being that Newport Coast is over 80 miles from the LA Rams practice facility in Thousand Oaks, CA., he likely will either buy or rent a home much closer to the facility than his Newport Coast home.

Report: Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford had minor thumb surgery
......
Matthew Stafford playing with all of these injuries likely helped increase his trade value.
At the same time, Jared Goff coming back to game action less than two weeks after thumb surgery probably helped sell Goff to Dan Campbell, Anthony Lynn, and Mark Brunell.

Rams trade for Matthew Stafford continues to be clear frontrunner for best move
.......
Regardless what transpires with Matthew Stafford and Jarrett Goff, the Lions weren't fleeced in this trade. Stafford is 33 years old and has had numerous injuries in recent seasons. Including, back injuries. One of which sidelined him for the final 8 games of the 2019 season. Unless Stafford in the next few seasons helps takes the LA Rams beyond where Jared Goff took them ( to a Super Bowl ), a strong case can be made that the Rams wouldn't have received enough value from him.
Granted, the Rams have the best DT and CB in the NFL. However, their overall roster lost a number of winning level contributors they need to effectively replace because of their problematic salary cap situation. Including, now Lions DT Michael Brockers and S now Browns S John Johnson.
The Rams highest current 2021 Draft Pick is # 57, in the second half of 2nd round. They have two 3rd Round picks, neither close to the top of the round. They also have one 4th, 6th, and 7th. They lack a 1st Round pick the next two years, because of the trade compensation in the Matthew Stafford trade. Hence, it will be more difficult for them to replenish the personnel losses because of their salary cap situation. The Rams might not have enough combined firepower at the skill positions and /or an effective enough Offensive Line for Stafford to pull off comebacks regularly.

Reported Broncos offer to Lions for Matthew Stafford detailed
..........
With or without Drew Lock, the Broncos didn't come remotely close to what the LA Rams ended up offering for Matthew Stafford.
Ironically, the Broncos might have to try to make a trade with the Lions in order to draft a QB in the 2021 Draft the Broncos envision as a long term solution. Especially, if they don't want to pay the price the Falcons seek for pick # 4.

Poll: Will you root for Matthew Stafford with the Rams? .....
Unless the Lions have realistic playoffs chances in a given season and an LA Rams win increases the Lions playoff chances, I'm not rooting for the Rams in one or more games. It's not because of Matthew Stafford. It's because of at least two reasons:
1. The next two seasons, the Lions have the Rams 1st Round Draft Picks.
2. Stan Kroenke is the owner of the LA Rams. The same Kroenke who used deception in moving the Rams from St. Louis to Los Angeles. And in large part, being similar to the owner in the movie ' Major League', who tired to intentionally run the Cleveland Indians baseball team to the ground in order to justify moving the team.
