Rams, Matthew Stafford badly wanted each other
.......
As long as the Lions don't pass up taking a QB with pick # 7 this year if that player has the draft grade to warrant the pick, there's very little future season downside to this trade.

Detroit Lions reportedly turned down Carolina's No. 8 pick this year for Matthew Stafford
..........
A straight up Matthew Stafford trade with the Carolina Panthers for pick # 8 was around the same value ( considering the Lions long term approach ) as the Lions received from the LA Rams, when taking Jared Goff out of the equation. Hence, it's probably best the Lions and Rams reached agreement, after the Rams substantially increased their offer. If Matthew Stafford refused to play for the Panthers and hence the Panthers backed out of the trade, it would have severely damaged the Lions trade leverage. Not to mention, the problems associated with Stafford being upset the Lions traded him to a team/ location he didn't want to go.

NFL fans have questions about Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford hanging in Cabo together
.........
It's possible one or more NFL teams will ask the NFL to investigate whether the LA Rams tampered with Matthew Stafford. I don't think the Rams will be punished by the NFL when all is said and done. The Lions might have even told the Rams that Sean McVay could speak with Matthew Stafford, after the Rams expressed interest in Stafford.

Grading the Lions and Rams blockbuster QB trade
.......
Even though the Lions don't get the benefit of present value from a 1st Round pick acquired from the Rams, the two 1st Round picks acquired will be in drafts that the Lions brass expects to be further along in the building process.

Report: Broncos offered the Lions a top-10 pick and Drew Lock for Matthew Stafford
....
This info differs from what was previously reported.
If the Broncos made a 2 for 1 offer, pick # 9 in 2021 and Drew Lock for Matthew Stafford, I would have been comfortable with the Lions accepted the offer. It's evident, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell are looking long term. Hence, the trade offer from the LA Rams was accepted.

Rams perspective on Matthew Stafford trade, Jared Goff’s potential in Detroit
.........
This is another podcast I recommend if you have the time. I first became familiar with Jourdan Rodrigue's work when she was a Carolina Panthers Beat Writer. She's knowledgeable and communicates well.
Jourdan is of the opinion that the Lions made an excellent hire with Brad Holmes as GM. She believes that Holmes will follow the LA Rams model ( at least to a large extent ) of trading for established high end NFL players, once Holmes gets the roster much closer where he eventually wants it to be. In Holmes 3rd season is when she can envision this to be a key component of Holmes' strategy as Lions GM.

Matthew Stafford: There were a few teams I didn’t want to get traded to
Matthew Stafford: I had a good relationship with Matt Patricia
............
What Matthew Stafford expressed in the article regarding Matt Patricia doesn't necessarily mean that Stafford wanted to be part of the 'Patriot Way' again. Also,' even though the Patriots have one of the best salary cap situations, Stafford might have had concerns about the Patriots competing with the Chiefs and one or more other teams in the AFC in the next few seasons. That much more considering the trade compensation from New England to Detroit that it would have taken for the Lions to have been willing to complete the trade.
