Mel Kiper Jr.: Detroit Lions should build around Jared Goff, pass on QB with seventh pick
........
Pick # 7 is still an excellent opportunity for the Lions in the building process of the team. But in looking at the following: The 2021 Draft Crop more closely, factoring in the adverse affect of COVID-19 on the 2020 College Football season and Pre-Draft period, and that Brad Holmes has to wait until after the draft to hire some people currently under contract elsewhere in the NFL, I think Holmes made a very good decision accepting the LA Rams offer over the Carolina Panthers offer for Matthew Stafford. Having pick # 7 AND pick # 8 in the 2021 Draft isn't that appealing, compared to the flexibility that the trade compensation from the LA Rams provides.
Trading down to pick # 12, if the Lions get at least the equivalent of a 2021 2nd Round pick in return, probably will be my preference, compared to remaining in the pick # 7 spot. However, Micah Parsons, even if he lasts to pick # 12, might be too risky, especially because of character concerns.
In-depth background checks are needed in general for players that are being considered in a draft or as free agents from other teams. Parsons is going to be under the microscope of many NFL teams leading up to the draft because of previous alleged incidents while at Penn State.

As you say, the Lions will have tremendous flexibility in the 2022 and 2023 drafts thanks to their additional picks. Moreover, Jared Goff should be given some credit as a starter, at least next season.

Unless there's evidence to suggest otherwise, I am of the opinion that the Lions value Jared Goff more than any other NFL team. If Goff stays relatively healthy, he probably will be given the opportunity to start all 16 or 17 2021 regular season games. This is regardless of whether the Lions draft a QB in 2021.

Detroit Lions 'comfortable' picking at No. 7, not surprised by early NFL draft trades
...........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Dolphins part of 2 mega Draft Trades (with 49ers and Eagles)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/989/dolphins-draft-trades-49ers-eagles?page=1&scrollTo=5050
My take 29 + days before the draft is if the Lions remain in the pick # 7 spot, the selection will be of the following players:
1. WR Ja'Marr Chase 2. WR De'Vonta Smith 3. WR Jaylen Waddle 4. TE Kyle Pitts ( if the projection is primarily as a WR ) 5. T Penei Sewell ( he would start at RT or RG as a rookie. ). 6. LB Micah Parsons
Because of everything that has transpired since the Lions acquired Jared Goff from the LA Rams as part of the Matthew Stafford trade, I am now of the opinion that at most, there's only a 10 % chance the Lions will draft a QB with the pick # 7 draft resources. That includes trading up or down from pick # 7.
In all of the many years that the Lions have picked in the top 10, I can't recall a draft that as many as 6 players seem like realistic possibilities as the selection. I'm hoping Ja'Marr Chase falls to # 7 for the Lions to at least have the option of taking him.
Between 2 and 5 QBs are going to be drafted with the top 6 picks. With at least 3 very likely. With 4 more likely than not.
Other than the Jaguars drafting QB Trevor Lawrence with pick # 1, the 49ers drafting a QB with pick # 3 ( or if they trade with the Jets to move up to pick # 2 ), and the Bengals staying at # 5 ( taking a T or WR ( Kyle Pitts included ), the top part of the draft can go in many different directions.

Dave Birkett's mock draft 3.0: Analyzing 3 potential trade down options for Detroit Lions
..........
If Ja'Marr Chase was taken in the first 6 picks of the draft, I hope the Lions accept any of the 3 trade down terms presented in the article. With the trade down with the WFT to pick # 19 my preference. The trade down with New England to # 15 would be my second preference.
If Chase remains available with pick # 7, only the trade down to pick # 19 might be tempting enough to prefer the Lions accept one of these 3 offers. At this time, the trade down to # 19 looks like a slightly better option than staying at # 7 to draft Chase.
If the Lions trade down to pick # 15, with same 14 players listed being taken already, at this time my preference if the Lions stay at # 15 would be to take either South Carolina CB Jaycee Horn or Alabama DT Christian Barmore.

Justin Rogers' 2021 NFL mock draft 2.0
7. Detroit Lions — DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama: The names have changed, but the Lions will enter 2021 with the same issue they had a year ago, lacking a long-term solution at receiver. Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman, the projected starters, are stopgaps on one-year deals. Smith might be small in stature, but he proved he can stay healthy playing in the fast and physical SEC, all while putting up monster numbers during his Heisman-winning campaign. His elite route running will complement the speed the Lions have added on the outside, giving quarterback Jared Goff a dangerous weapon to take advantage of the space underneath and along the sidelines.
........
If the first 6 selections went the way Justin Rogers is projecting in this Mock Draft, I think the Lions will receive at least one viable trade down offer from a team looking to draft a QB.
W/o trades factored in, Alabama WRs DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle are the favorites to be drafted by the Lions with pick # 7.

It's been a while now that the Lions have drafted a Wide Receiver in the first round, in fact the last one was Calvin Johnson in 2007 !

This, after Calvin Johnson becoming the 4th WR in 5 drafts that the Lions selected in the 1st Round.

Peter Schrager 2021 NFL mock draft 1.0: Pats trade up for Justin Fields, Cardinals go get Kyle Pitts
Pick 7 Arizona Cardinals
(via Lions) TRADE Kyle Pitts
Florida · TE Pitts isn't falling out of the top eight. Too many teams are intoxicated by him. I've got the Cardinals as aggressors -- as they've been all offseason -- with Steve Keim bringing in yet another weapon for Kyler Murray. Arizona gives up this year's first-rounder, next year's first and next year's third to move up from No. 16.
Pick 16 Detroit Lions
(via Cardinals) TRADE DeVonta Smith
Alabama · WR If Detroit trades out of No. 7, scoops up some additional picks and still gets Smith, I'd see that as a Day 1 home run. The Alabama product has elite ball skills, won in big spots and is a gamer in every sense of the word. The Lions bid farewell to their top two wideouts in free agency, and Golden Tate a year before that. Insert the Heisman winner.
.........
If this Mock Draft becomes a reality, it would be a Grand Slam Home Run for the Lions. I would be more than pleasantly surprised if the Lions got this much draft compensation for a non-QB, to go down from pick # 7 to pick #16.
DeVonta Smith probably won't fall as low as to pick # 16. But because of Smith weighing only 170 lbs, it wouldn't be shocking on this end if Smith lasts to pick # 16. If the Dolphins and Lions pass on Smith at. # 6 and # 7 respectively, and no trades occur from # 8 to # 11, I think there's a good chance Smith is available for the Eagles at # 12.

2021 NFL mock draft: Patriots trade up to No. 4, creating unprecedented run on quarterbacks
Round 1 - Pick 7 team logo
Justin Fields QB OHIO STATE • JR • 6'3" / 228 LBS PROJECTED TEAM Denver PROSPECT RNK 6th POSITION RNK 3rd Trade details: Broncos give up first-rounder (No. 9), third-rounder (No. 71) and sixth-rounder (No. 191). Denver was never going into training camp without providing real competition for Drew Lock. New GM George Paton trades up here because he's not entirely sure the Panthers won't take Fields since they have not yet picked up Sam Darnold's fifth-year option (which they appear to be waiting until after the draft to do for a reason ... hmmm).
Mock Trade from Denver Broncos Round 1 - Pick 9 team logo
Jaylen Waddle WR ALABAMA • JR • 5'10" / 182 LBS PROJECTED TEAM Detroit PROSPECT RNK 8th POSITION RNK 2nd I badly wanted to trade down again in this mock with new GM Brad Holmes, considering his track record with the Rams. Ultimately, though, Jared Goff needs someone to throw to other than Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman at wideout.
.......
A case can be made for the Lions keeping pick # 7 in order to draft WR Ja'marr Chase. The same for the trade down with the Broncos, with the Lions drafting WR Jaylen Waddle. It's realistically possible Waddle will be the Lions highest ranked WR in this draft. Because of Waddle's speed and quickness, he might be a better fit for Jared Goff.
Though it's a close call between the two options presented in this article, I prefer the Lions to keep pick # 7 in order to draft Chase. The upside of Chase, combined with the uncertainty of Goff's long term future with the Lions, leads me to believe the Lions should draft Chase if these are the two options to consider. Even if Waddle is the better fit for Goff, Chase should help Goff substantially.

Taking a look at the top 10 picks, with 16 days to go
.....
I much rather the Lions trade down if there's a good offer than remain at # 7 in order to draft a QB. The Lions have the opportunity to see if Jared Goff can get back to being a long term NFL QB solution. The leverage the Lions already have in the 2022 and 2023 drafts gives the Lions much more flexibility to pass on QBs in the 2021 Draft.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper has Lions staying put at Pick 7 for WR Ja’Marr Chase in 2-round mock draft
Mel Kiper throws the Lions a serious 2-round curveball in his latest mock
Because of the COVID-19 overall situation that greatly affected the norm of the 2020 College Football Season and the pre-draft period, expect the unexpected in the 2021 season draft.
One thing in particular that could help Malcolm Koonce get drafted much higher than most are expecting is that like Koonce, Bears OLB DE Khalil Mack played his college ball with Buffalo.
On the other hand, Koonce missed the Senior Bowl with a foot injury. The injury prevented him from working out at Buffalo's Pro Day. Unless Koonce is healthy enough to have a workout prior to the draft, the unknowns regarding testing numbers with him could easily negate the benefit of the Khalil Mack connection.

Odds say Lions will draft WR or QB with their first pick
.....
As always, I don't recommend betting.
From a Lions / draft analysis standpoint, the odds of the Lions drafting Kyle Pitts and him being listed as a TE on the draft card seem much more likely than 16-1.
The likelihood of the Lions drafting an Offensive Lineman as the team's first 2021 draft selection appear noticeably more likely than the 6-1 odds reflect. At minimum, there's at least a 40 % chance Penei Sewell will be available when the Lions are scheduled to be on the clock for pick # 7. If Sewell is available with pick # 7 and the Lions keep the pick, Sewell will be no lower than the 2nd most likely Lions projection for the selection.
If the Lions trade down to the second half of Round 1, a Safety could realistically be the Lions selection. Safety is probably the Lions greatest need at this time. The odds seem more like between 15 to 1 and 20 to 1 than the 66-1 odds by the source listed in the article.
