Jets trade Sam Darnold to Panthers
.....
This new thread relates to the following thread:
Lions have Pick # 7 in the 2021 NFL Draft
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/865/lions-pick-2021-nfl-draft
The trade looks like one that the trade compensation looks even or close. I don't believe that either team got the best of the other with the trade compensation
For the Jets, they clear believe that with a new HC ( Robert Saleh) and a new Offensive Coordinator ( Mike LaFleur- younger brother of Packers HC Matt LaFleur ), it's best to go in another direction at QB. I'm not close to being convinced that BYU QB Zac Wilson, the probable selection by the Jets with pick # 2, will prove to be the long term solution at QB they have been seeking since Joe Namath was traded to the LA Rams in 1977.
For the Panthers, I think they made a good decision not trading up for a QB this year. The risk / reward didn't appear to be favorable. If Sam Darnold doesn't pan out, it will cost them in the short run. But because they didn't have to give up a 1st Round pick in the trade with the Jets for Darnold, with the overall trade package appearing to be the equivalent of a 2nd Round pick in 2021, they will have the draft capital to select a QB who realistically will turn out to be a long term solution.
For the Lions, I think because of this trade, it will be more difficult ( but certainly not hopeless ) to get a viable trade down offer for pick # 7. Teams behind the Lions in the draft order no longer have to be concerned about another team leaping immediately ahead of the Panthers to draft a QB.

How does the Sam Darnold trade impact the Lions draft options?
.......
It's more likely than not that the Bengals and Dolphins aren't going to trade down from picks # 5 and # 6, respectively. Barring something totally unexpected, the Bengals won't be drafting a QB with pick # 5. The Dolphins probably won't be drafting a QB at # 6 but it can't be ruled out. Hence, it seems most likely that 3 or 4 QBs will be drafted before pick # 7.

Scott Fitterer says Panthers have talked to at least five teams about trading back from No. 8
.......
In looking at the Panthers roster when making my Round 1 Mock Draft selection for them, the Panthers can especially use help in no particular order at TE, LT, G, DT, CB, and S. If I were in their position with pick # 8, a good trade down offer would be the preference.
Being that at least 5 teams have spoken to the Panthers about trading up to pick # 8, I'm assuming at least most of these teams spoke to the Lions about trading up to pick # 7.
It's realistically possible that Brad Holmes assesses that the draft drops off at a different point than after the top 15 to 19 players. In working on my Mock Draft as I enter pick # 20, it doesn't seem like the drop-off has occurred. Keeping in mind that this is a very basic viewpoint. The time and resources a typical NFL organization puts into assessing a draft is the equivalent of light years more than what I would even be capable of.
