In the 'Lions to host T Giovanni Manu (UBC-Canada) Pre-Draft Visit' thread, I expressed the following:
Giovanni Manu could realistically be drafted as late as the 3rd Round through the 6th Round.
Manu is a project player, who probably won't be able to contribute on Offense as a rookie.
The team that drafts Manu needs to be prepared to keep him on their 53 man roster throughout the season. If Manu is released, he could easily be claimed off waivers. Even if Manu isn't claimed off waivers, and is put on the Practice Squad, another team could offer him a contract during the season.
Manu seems to be a better fit for a team with much lower realistic expectations than the Lions have for the 2024 season. Unless the Lions get at least one additional pick in this draft and the team brass believes that it's feasible to keep Manu on the 53 man roster all season, the Lions would be better off passing on him in the draft. If both criteria are met, the Lions should consider Manu as early as Pick # 163, in Round 5, if his Lions draft grade is reflective of being taken in that spot. My guess is the earliest would select Manu is in Round 6.
A couple of corrections from what I wrote in that thread:
1. The first sentence should have read: Giovanni Manu could realistically be drafted in the late 3rd Round through the 6th Round.
2. The last sentence should have read: My guess is the earliest the Lions would select Manu is in Round 6.
It's evident that Brad Holmes and co. are higher on Giovanni Manu than I envisioned.
Being that the Lions traded the team's 3rd Round Pick in 2025 to the Jets, for Pick # 126 in the latter part of Round 4, in order to be able to secure the NFL rights to Giovanni Manu, the Lions clearly value Manu more than a pick in the latter part of Round 3 in 2025. The Lions expectations for this season are VERY high.
Chances are, Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell, and Hank Fraley view Manu as a long term starting Tackle, who will be an asset for the Lions in that role. Otherwise, I doubt the Lions would have given up a 3rd Round Pick in 2025 for Manu.
Manu clearly has plenty of upside potential as an NFL Tackle but he's a huge project, both figuratively and literally. Brad Holmes has earned the benefit of the doubt with this trade.
As for this season, if Manu does have a role with the Lions on Offense, it probably would be as an extra Offensive Lineman, whose supposed to be eligible (hopefully, Brad Allen won't be officiating anymore Lions games).
In essence, the Lions get a year of development with Manu, before the 2025 Draft. That's a major benefit of the trade.
