Brad Holmes has an excellent approach regarding the Offensive Line. A good Offensive Line, that's well balanced is important for an NFL team. But for the Lions, with Jared Goff as the team's # 1 QB, it's even more important than for the typical NFL team. Goff thrives with play action passes. The Lions need a strong running game for play action fakes to be consistently effective. Also, Goff's mobility is not one of his strong suits.
Even one injury on the Offensive Line could be the difference in the outcome of the game. The Lions not having now former LG Jonah Jackson in the NFC Championship game in SF was one of the key reasons why I believe the Lions ended up losing the game. I thought his replacement, Kayode Awosika, did a good job vs. the Bucs a week earlier, when replacing the injured Jackson during the game. In the 2nd half of the 49ers game, especially in the passing game, that's when I thought the loss of Jackson proved costly.
Patrick Mahomes is on a path to be the most accomplished or 2nd most accomplished QB of all-time, with Tom Brady currently the most accomplished. In the one Super Bowl that Mahomes was on the losing end, the Chiefs were depleted at Offensive Tackle. Mahomes was under more pressure in that game than in any Chiefs game that I have seen. On the other side, the Bucs had a balanced Offense led by Tom Brady, in very large part because of their Offensive Line play. Mahomes still made some throws (his receivers let him down on multiple occasion) that almost no other QB in NFL history could have made. Yet, with poor Offensive play, the Chiefs couldn't even come close to overcoming passes dropped.
