In the 'NFL Draft Preview: Wide Receivers ( 2023 )', I expressed the following:
Josh Downs is the UNC WR who is projected to go in the top 2 Rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft. Antoine Green very likely won't be selected until Day 3 of the draft, if he is drafted.
The Lions have two 6th Round Picks and no 7th Round Pick at this time. If the Lions don't draft a WR earlier in the draft, Green could very realistically be on the Lions radar screen in Round 6.
Ironically, the Lions ended up with one Pick in the 7th Round (which was used on Antoine Green) and no picks in the 6th Round.
Josh Downs ended up being drafted by the Colts with Pick # 79, in Round 3. Good value selection.
Antoine Green was selected with the 2023 7th Round pick the Lions received from the Eagles in the D'Andre Swift trade. ''
At the Combine, Antoine Green measured 6'1 5/8", weighed 197 pounds, and ran a 4.47 40. Green's arm length was measured at 32 1/8" and he had a 33 1/2" Vertical Jump.
At Green's Pro Day, his arm length and height were a 1/2 inch longer than what he measured at the Combine.
Antoine Green provided the vertical dimension with North Carolina that the Lions need, especially without Jamison Williams for 6 games. Green has vertical speed and is very effective coming down with the long ball. Green's height, timing, and physicality are major assets in Green winning contested vertical throws. His average reception with North Carolina, in his 5 seasons with the Tar Heels, was 19.0. This is excellent!
On the other hand, Green has struggled mightily when used in the Slot and in getting into and out of his breaks in general/ getting separation. He also needs to improve on coming back to the ball.
With Jamison Williams suspended for the first 6 games, Antoine Green has a better chance of winning an opening day spot on the Lions 53 man roster. How Green progresses with non-deep vertical routes, how well he blocks, and his progress on Special Teams will all go a long way in helping determine if Green is on the Lions opening day 53 man roster. If Green doesn't make the Lions opening day 53 man roster, he probably will get an opportunity on the Lions Practice Squad.
Antoine Green is a good risk/ reward selection with Pick # 219, in Round 7, by the Lions.
