I expressed the following a few days ago in the 'Lions have Pick # 7 in the 2021 NFL Draft' thread:
Many have Amon-Ra St. Brown being drafted in Round 3. It wouldn't be surprising if he went as high as pick # 71. However, I think the Lions can get more out of that draft resource. Marvin Wilson at # 101 ( it's listed as # 102 in the article ) would seem like a good value pick. I think the most likely landing point for Wilson is the upper part of Round 3. He has plenty of upside potential.
As it turns out, Amon-Ra St. Brown wasn't taken in the top 3 Rounds and he lasted to pick # 112, the 7th pick of the Round. Even though most people that projected this much of the draft outcome had St. Brown going noticing higher pick # 112, I think this is around the spot that I envisioned him going in.
I'm comfortable with the Lions drafting Amon St. Brown with pick # 112, in the early part of Round 4. Clemson WR Cornell Powell, the WR I would have preferred with this pick or # 113, if the Lions were going to address WR, surprisingly ( on this end ) lasted to pick # 181 in the latter part of Round 5 ( Chiefs ). Being that it was Andy Reid ( a mastermind of NFL passing ) who drafted Powell and Patrick Mahomes II is the Chiefs starting QB, it wouldn't surprise me in the least that Powell's play eventually far exceeds the draft spot he was selected in.
The reason why I didn't believe St. Brown would be drafted noticeably higher than pick # 112 is he doesn't seem to have a high ceiling as an NFL prospect. His vertical speed limitations, average at absolute best size / length combo, and ordinary power, substantially limit his upside potential.
St. Brown is a low risk player, who can be counted on to come at or close to his NFL potential. He's a good fit for what Jared Goff displayed with the LA Rams. St. Brown is most effective as a Slot WR. He's quick, runs very good routes, catches the ball cleanly and consistently, has a great feel for zone coverage and how to find openings in zones. St. Brown adjusts to passes well. He gives high effort as a blocker. Using St. Brown as depth to return punts, which he has college experience with, is an option.
Chances are good that Amon-Ra St. Brown will emerge as the Lions primary slot WR by the beginning of his rookie regular season with the Lions. When all is said and done, I think his value will reflect his draft slot. Someone who will help move the chains. But not someone who will be much more than a dependable # 3 WR.
