Every NFL team's top position battle to watch during 2024 training camp
Detroit Lions: Edge rusher (opposite Aidan Hutchinson)
One edge rusher position is carved in marble with budding superstar Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions have a few options for who starts at the DE/OLB position on the other side of the formation, however. The three players who primarily manned the role in 2023 (Charles Harris, Julian Okwara, Romeo Okwara) are all gone. That leaves a battle between Josh Paschal, John Cominsky and James Houston as holdovers who have played in that spot for Detroit recently. All offer something different and intriguing, but all have struggled with consistency and injuries, too. There are a couple of wild-card options as well, including Derrick Barnes moving to more of a pass-rushing role at linebacker. Then there’s free agent signee Marcus Davenport, a former first-rounder looking to stay healthy enough to revive his sagging career in a defensive scheme that’s tailor-made for his pass-rushing skills. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire

Lions camp observations: Onwuzurike's early workload encouraging
...........
Brodric Martin and Levi Onwuzurike need to continue to build on their progress. It's encouraging that both have earned opportunities higher up on the depth chart.
Daurice Fountain is definitely a WR to keep an eye on, to see if he can continue to make big plays and regarding overall consistency.
Hopefully, Hendon Hooker will earn the Lions # 2 QB job on merit.

Lions camp observations: Reynolds showing no interest ceding No. 3 RB role
.........
With Zonovan Knight also in the competition for a backup RB spot behind Jahymr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the Lions are in good to great shape regarding RB depth/ competition.
Hendon Hooker needs to get most of the pre-season QB snaps for the Lions. Growing pains are inevitable for Hooker.

Lions camp observations: Bates has long-distance struggles, team unity remains strong after scuffles
...........
Jake Bates has huge upside potential. Training Camp and the Pre-Season are invaluable for Bates in his development as an NFL Kicker with the Lions. Having said that, it's imperative the Lions bring in another Kicker both for competition purposes and to help with the practice workload.
Derrick Barnes and other Lions players have to keep in mind that even one Unnecessary Roughness penalty could prove costly to the Lions in the overall season.
Terrion Arnold should continue to improve with each practice, even factoring in the inevitable growing pains.

Lions training camp notebook, Day 5: The pads (finally!) come on
..........
It's good to see Colby Sorsdal improving. The question that comes to mind is whether Sorsdal is getting practice reps at Guard, in addition to Tackle?
Unfortunately, Netane Muti suffered a major injury on Tuesday, which landed him on IR.
Offensive line Depth is becoming more and more of a concern on this end.
C.J. Moore's lack of reps on Defense is definitely something worth paying attention to with the pre-season beginning Thursday Night at the Giants.

Lions camp notebook, Day 6: Standouts and injuries
...........
It's good to see Ifeatu Melifonwu progressing.
Parker Hesse might even have emerged as the favorite to be the Lions opening day # 3 TE. He's been a pleasant surprise on this end, in practice.
With Marcus Davenport, the key remains health. He clearly still has high caliber athletic skills.

Lions training camp notebook, Day 8: Turning up the heat
...........
Derrick Barnes is building on his 2023 season, in which he made huge strides. Very encouraging.
Nate Lynn is helping his cause in at least landing a Practice Squad spot with the Lions at the beginning of the season.

Lions training camp notebook, Day 9: Intrasquad scrimmage to end the week
..........
This week at the Giants, both in the Joint Practices and in the Pre-Season opener for both teams, is especially important regarding Hendon Hooker. Repeating the same mistake in consecutive days in practice, which resulted in interceptions, is concerning. For at least the foreseeable future, the Lions are in very serious trouble if Jared Goff is sidelined when the games start counting in the standings.
Jake Bates clearly has huge upside potential. But serious competition for Bates is needed.
Giovanni Manu seems light years from being able to be counted on in a regular season game. Even in a pre-season game, he's going to need help in pass protection, in order to reduce the chances of an injury to the Lions QB in the game at the time.
Khalil Dorsey and Kindle Vildor could easily be in a battle for a backup CB spot. With Special Teams the primary reason one of them is on the Lions 53 man roster.
Jermar Jefferson probably is having his best training camp with the Lions. This is his 4th training camp with the team.

Lions training camp notebook: Evening time for the 1st time
..........
This thread relates to the following threads:
Giants 14, Lions 3: Pre-Season Game # 1 ( 2024 )

Great job by Barry Sanders and Golden Tate.
If Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport remain on their current path, the Lions are going to have one of best DE pairs in the NFL.
With Jahmyr Gibbs dealing with a hamstring injury, David Montgomery will more likely than not get the majority of RB snaps for the Lions early in the regular season. It's good to see that Montgomery is performing well in training camp.
Ifeatu Melifonwu is having a very uneven training camp. He needs to become much more consistent and soon.
Jameson Williams needs to get back on course with securing receptions.

Lions training camp notebook: Getting ready for the 2nd preseason game ..............
Thankfully, Hendon Hooker was healthy to the extent that he was cleared for practice.
Aidan Hutchinson and DT Alim McNeill are on a path of being amongst the best players at their respective positions.
Kindle Vildor stepped up big time in training camp. To Vildor's credit, he didn't let the adversity from the NFC Championship Game compound. The opposite is occurring with Vildor.
Jason Bates needs to respond from the adversity of Wednesday's Practice with a good performance in tomorrow pre-season game in Kansas City.
