From the standpoint of trade compensation, I believe that the Lions did a great job with the trade. Getting the two 6th Round Picks in the trade gives Brad Holmes and co. more opportunities to either find draft gems or at least prospects that can provide depth and Special Teams competition. The Lions also gained draft flexibility with the two 6th Round Picks as part of the trade. Holmes and Co. have a history of good to great 6th Round value selections. In the 2022 Draft, the Lions selected Malcolm Rodriguez and James Houston in Round 6.
A huge key for the Lions regarding this trade is for Carlton Davis to have a clean bill of health when he takes a Lions physical and the Lions coming to a contract extension agreement with Davis that will free up salary cap space for 2024. It's very realistically possible that the Lions and Davis agent worked out a contract extension as part of the trade.
Carlton Davis is a winning level starting outside CB in the NFL. The concern with Davis is he's missed between 3 and 6 regular season games in his 6 NFL seasons. I can't recall Davis suffering a career altering type of injury but he hasn't been able to stay relatively healthy in any season. Even with the addition of Davis and the Lions re-signing Emmanuel Mosely, CB should be in serious play in the first 3 Rounds of the 2024 Draft. On paper, the Lions have improved at CB. But for Davis to be even close to a legit # 1 CB, he needs to stay relatively healthy.
