2024 NFL Mock Draft: 3 QBs are selected in first 3 picks while Giants and Jets trade into top 5
32. DETROIT LIONS (FROM KANSAS CITY): CB KOOL-AID MCKINSTRY, ALABAMA Projected trade: Lions receive Pick Nos. 32, 159; Chiefs receive Pick No. 29. Cornerback was a problem position for Detroit last season. They added both Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson in free agency, but neither player has a PFF coverage grade above 70 in either of the last two seasons. McKinstry doesn’t need to be a Week 1 starter but should be able to overtake one of those players on the depth chart by 2025.
............
While this looks like a good outcome for the Lions, Pick # 159 in Round 5 might not be enough for the Lions to trade down from Pick # 29 to Pick # 32 in Round 1. The Chiefs have Pick # 131 in the latter part of Round 4. That's the Pick that the Lions probably would try to get from the Chiefs to go from Pick # 29 to # 32.
A major benefit of trading down from Pick # 29 to Pick # 32 is the Lions would get draft compensation and still have a 1st Round Pick. Much of the value of having a 1st Round Pick compared to a high 2nd Round Pick is with 1st Round Picks, teams get a 5th Year option with the players selected in the 1st Round.

Detroit Lions a top trade-up candidate in NFL draft, 'knocking on the door' of Super Bowl
............
If the Lions trade up at least 10 picks from Pick # 29, I would be surprised if it was for an Offensive Lineman. The Lions depth on the Offensive Line at present for the 2024 season is a concern at all O-Line positions. With age and injury history being a concern with most of the Lions starting Offensive Line, there's at least a pretty good chance that at least one backup O-Lineman will have to start multiple games for the Lions in the 2024 season. Yet, even factoring this in, the draft compensation cost of moving up in the draft for a player that doesn't project to be a starter in the 2024 season could easily exceed the value the Lions receive in the 2024 season. I think it's more likely the Lions would trade up 10 or more spots for a CB, Edge player, or a WR than an Offensive Lineman.

Dan Parr 2024 NFL mock draft 2.0: Three trades reshuffle Round 1; five quarterbacks in top 13 picks
Pick 29
Detroit Lions Kool-Aid McKinstry
Alabama · CB · Junior I had Kool-Aid going to Detroit in my first mock and I’m sticking with him here. The release of Cameron Sutton left the Lions thin at cornerback once again.
............
There's been speculation that the draft stock of Oregon C-G Jackson Powers-Jackson has dropped to the extent that he probably will last to Round 2. I'm not sure if this has validity or if it's the type of smoke to help a team land a player that they have great interest in. I'm not questioning those in the following video reporting the information they heard, regarding JPJ.

2024 NFL Mock Draft: Chargers, Giants land star wideouts after QBs go 1-4
29. Detroit Lions (Carmen): EDGE Laitu Latu, UCLA
I can't in good conscience actually think Latu would fall to the Lions, but then again, who would be shocked? Detroit has drafted extraordinarily well under general manager Brad Holmes and he's shown the willingness to just take good players. Latu rotating with Marcus Davenport opposite Aidan Hutchinson with now D.J. Reader and the ever-underrated Alim McNeill on the interior? That is scary for everyone else in the NFC.
..........
Even factoring in Laiatu Latu having short arms for a DE (32 5/8"), the only way I believe he will last to Pick # 29 is if medical information about his neck is very concerning. My guess is that this won't be the case. If Latu is available with Pick # 29 and he was given a green light by the Lions Medical Staff, I believe he would be the Lions selection.
Latu is one of the players in this draft that I can envision the Lions trading up for. Being that Aidan Hutchinson's arm length is in the same range as Latu, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell would gladly select Latu. The combination of Latu's ability, productivity, and intangibles makes him a great fit for the Lions.

2024 NFL Mock Draft: Raiders trade up for Michael Penix Jr.; Chargers land two pass catchers
Round 1, Pick 29
player headshot Johnny Newton DL ILLINOIS • JR • 6'2" / 295 LBS PROJECTED TEAM Detroit PROSPECT RNK 25th POSITION RNK 2nd Newton continues what has been a youth movement in recent drafts for the Lions along their defense line.
.......
If Jer'Zhan Newton and Graham Barton are both available with Pick # 29, unless another team is willing to substantially overpay the Lions in trade compensation to move up to # 29, I hope the Lions don't trade down beyond Pick # 30. It seems like a very close call which of the two players the Lions would draft, if both are available, and the Lions remain at # 29. I give Barton a very slight edge in being the player the Lions would take, if it comes down to the two players. The versatility that Barton has, plus us overall abilities, and intangibles, could make him a great addition to Lions. I would also be thrilled with Newton at # 29.

The following video is definitely worth watching regarding information about players that the Lions would very likely have serious interest in if the team medical staff believes they don't have significant injury risk, based on a past injury:

2024 NFL Mock Draft: Drake Maye slides past 3rd overall and Saints trade into top 10
29. Detroit Lions: Florida State EDGE Jared Verse Is there a better fit than Verse's power game with Dan Campbell's lunch pail and grit style? He likely doesn't slide down this far, but you never know.
...........
If the first 28 players in this Mock Draft are off the board, I don't think it would take Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell more than a minute for Jared Verse to be the Lions selection with Pick # 29. I'm not anticipating Verse lasting to pick # 29. This is the first Mock Draft that I have posted the link in the DLF that has Verse available with Pick # 29. Jackson Powers-Johnson would be a distant 2nd, in terms of the pecking order of players that I think the Lions would choose, in this Mock Draft scenario. Verse is one of the very few players in this draft that I think the Lions would seriously consider trading up for before Pick # 20.

Predicting how Detroit Lions spend their NFL draft picks in trade up, trade down scenarios
...........
Of the 3 scenarios, I like Scenario 1 (Trade Up) the best. The value the Lions would get with Terrion Arnold and Marshawn Kneeland exceeds the cost of the Lions trading away Pick # 73, in Round 3. This is even without getting back Pick # 154, in Round 5. The Lions would be getting arguably the best CB in the draft and a DE who has the potential to be a starter. With, the versatility to play in many Defensive Alignments.
Scenario 3 (Sit Tight) would be my # 2 choice, of the 3 options, including the players listed as the outcome.
Scenario 2 (Trade Down) is my least favorite choice. Even switching the spots Ja'Lynn Polk and Brandon Dorlus are selected, it doesn't seem like the Lions are getting enough value to trade down from # 29.

2024 NFL Mock Draft: Rogers would take Penix over Daniels, McCarthy if he were GM
29. Detroit Lions Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State Aidan Hutchinson is on his way to stardom and the Lions took a flyer on Marcus Davenport, but they shouldn’t stop there. Robinson is as explosive as they come, but he needs development to find consistency. This defense can ease him in, allowing him to pin his ears back on passing downs to wreak havoc.
.........
If the first 28 players in this Mock Draft have been selected already, I hope the Lions get a good enough trade offer to trade down.
Chop Robinson might end up being the Lions selection under this scenario. He has big time pass rush potential. But my gut feeling is that he doesn't check enough boxes for the Lions to select him at # 29. Darius Robinson and Mike Sainristil more likely than not appeal to Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell more than Chop Robinson.

2024 mock draft: NFL Nation reporters make first-round predictions
29. Detroit Lions Eric Woodyard's pick: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama
One of the Lions' biggest priorities is to upgrade the defense -- even after a strong free agency period. Not only is Detroit addressing a pass defense that allowed 7.8 yards per pass attempt (second worst), but the Alabama pipeline continues to roll after the Lions selected WR Jameson Williams in 2022, and RB Jahmyr Gibbs and DB Brian Branch in 2023.
...........
Georgia T Amarius Mims would be very tempting with Pick # 29, if he drops to that spot. Mims only started 8 games in college, as an ankle injury, which he had surgery for, limited him to 6 starts in his final season with Georgia. Mims declared for the draft after his true Junior season. Mims didn't give up any sacks in his 8 starts but has a long way to go from a developmental standpoint. Especially, as a run blocker. If the Lions medical staff is satisfied with Mims medically and from an intangible and Lions culture standpoint, I hope the Lions select him. Mims played RT exclusively on Offense for Georgia, but he did get some practice reps at LT. Long term, Mims appears to have major upside potential at LT.

Detroit Lions in NFL draft: 6 players who would make sense at 29th pick
..........
This is my assessment of the six players, regarding whether they will be available at Pick # 29:
Jer’Zhan 'Johnny' Newton and Cooper DeJean are the two players on this list that probably won't be available at # 29. Darius Robinson is slightly more likely than not going to be available at # 29. I believe the other 3 players will be available.
If somehow both Newton and DeJean are available, I would be thrilled with either. My guess is DeJean would be the selection, because of his versatility, though it's a close call between the two players. So much could depend on the Lions assessment on the chances of signing DT Alim McNeill to a new contract.

2024 NFL mock draft: Final first-round projections with major trades up top
29. Detroit Lions: DT Johnny Newton, Illinois
Newton is an outstanding interior pass rusher, a slippery and powerful force on the inside in the mold of Gerald McCoy and Tommie Harris. Adding Newton to a line that features rising star Alim McNeill and veteran acquisition D.J. Reader gives the Lions formidable depth and disruptive ability between the tackles. He’s a force multiplier for Detroit’s defense, making Aidan Hutchinson better but also helping mask some holes in the secondary and improving the ability to defend against mobile quarterbacks taking off up the middle. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire
............
Three huge obstacles jump out in this Mock Draft for the excellent outcome of the Lions landing Johnny Newton with Pick # 29 becoming a reality: Miami at Pick # 21, Minnesota at Pick # 23 and the LA Rams at # 26, after they traded down from Pick # 19. The Bucs keeping Pick # 26 would increase the chances of Newton lasting to Pick # 29. If Newton is available with Pick # 26, the Rams could easily select him, being that future HOF DT Aaron Donald retired last month.
