Time will tell if Jared Goff will be the Lions long term QB. The chances of Goff being the Lions long term QB have enormously increased, especially since the first half of the 2021 season.

Three thoughts come to mind:

1. For all the criticism that LA Rams ended up getting for signing Jared Goff to the contract extension they gave him, the Lions would probably sign Goff to similar terms, if Goff would agree. This is even with $ 110 million guaranteed against injury.

2. To sign Goff to a contract extension, the Lions probably are going to need to at least match that part of the contract extension he signed with the Rams and offer Goff higher end numbers.

3. My # 1 concern for the Lions signing Goff to a lucrative contract extension is the question mark of what will happen with Goff's play if Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson leaves the Lions to become an NFL HC elsewhere or if the Lions and Johnson move on for another reason?

Everything else regarding Goff's future with the Lions and how the Lions proceed with the QB position in the 2023 Draft, remains to be seen.

Jared Goff is taking some heat for his comment, which seems off base. Goff didn't say that the Lions WOULD beat Packers, if Aaron Rodgers was still with Green Bay, instead of being traded to the Jets. Goff said we COULD beat him twice a year, if Rodgers was still with the Packers.

In that thread, I expressed the following:

It remains to be seen what's going to transpire with Jared Goff in the 2023 season and what happens regarding Goff next off-season. With Hooker being selected by the Lions in the 2023 Draft, I don't expect the Lions and Jared Goff to agree on a contract extension before the end of the 2023 season. Beyond that point, there's substantial uncertainty with Goff's future with the Lions and the level of progress Hooker. At least though, the Lions finally have added a rookie QB with high upside.

One thing in particular I'm confident about is Jared Goff will continue to be a Leader on the Lions and a true professional overall. Goff has an excellent opportunity in the 2023 season to help lead the Lions to an NFL North Title and success in the playoffs.

If the Lions and Jared Goff agree to a contract extension in the next few months, it more like than not won't be an extension for more than 2 additional seasons. Whether a contract extension in the coming month is longer than 2 years or not, I think the Lions will try to structure the contract in such a way that the salary cap hit, if the Lions decide to move on from Goff, won't be debilitating for the Lions.
