While I thought Hendon Hooker would last to Round 2 (#Pick 33), with the range of Hooker being taken from Pick # 11 to the Middle of Round 2, I certainly didn't expect Hooker to be available with Pick # 68, in the early part of Round 3. At this point in the draft, I believe the decision by the Lions to draft Hooker is a very good risk/ reward decision. Especially, with the trade compensation, with the Lions going from Pick # 55 to Pick # 63 (Trade with the Chiefs) to Pick # 68 (Trade with the Broncos). I'm not sure though if it was better to make both trades or whether the Lions would have been better off keeping Pick # 55, with Florida G O'Cyrus Torrence being the selection.
It's far from a given that Hendon Hooker will be ready for the start of Training Camp or for any of Training Camp. I'm going on the assumption Hooker won't be ready for the start of training camp, unless proven otherwise. I wouldn't be surprised at all of Hooker begins the Regular Season on the NFL Non-Injury List.
If it turns out Hooker is ready for the start of training camp or relatively early in training camp, that should give him enough time to beat out Nate Sudfeld for the # 2 QB spot.
One huge positive with the Lions selection of Hooker is his excellent work ethic. While Hooker is still in the rehab process, not being cleared by the Lions to participate in practice, I'm anticipating he will be a sponge at Lions Team and Unit meetings. Having the opportunity to learn from Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson, QB Coach Mark Brunell, and starting QB Jared Goff, should greatly help in Hooker's development.
Hooker has good arm strength and is an accurate deep thrower. Very possibility, the best deep thrower in the 2023 Draft.
Hooker's pre-knee injury mobility was an asset. Hopefully, Hooker will regain all or at least the vast majority of that mobility by the 2024 season.
Hooker's TD-interception ration in 2022 and 2023, his seasons with Tennessee, was off the charts.
A huge challenge for Hooker, especially from a mental standpoint, is learning and adapting to a much more complex Offense than the Offense in ran with Tennessee.
Hooker will also need to improve his football at times, which includes Hooker needing better accuracy when his forced off platform. Hooker also definitely needs to improve pre-blitz recognition and in avoiding fumbles. Hooker fumbled 39 times in college, including 22 times in his two seasons with Tennessee. Hooker has large hands, which increase the chances of his fumbling becoming much less of an issue.
It remains to be seen what's going to transpire with Jared Goff in the 2023 season and what happens regarding Goff next off-season. With Hooker being selected by the Lions in the 2023 Draft, I don't expect the Lions and Jared Goff to agree on a contract extension before the end of the 2023 season. Beyond that point, there's substantial uncertainty with Goff's future with the Lions and the level of progress Hooker. At least though, the Lions finally have added a rookie QB with high upside.
