In the 'NFL Draft Preview: Offensive Lineman ( 2024 ) thread', I expressed the following:
Christian Mahogany probably will be drafted in Round 3 or early in Round 4. He probably doesn't have the versatility to be a viable option at Tackle or Center. I believe Pick # 73, in Round 3 would be somewhat high to select Mahogany. Trading down and then selecting him would likely provide good draft value.
In the 'Round 2 & Round 3 options for the Lions ( 2024)' thread, I mentioned, based on my Preference List rankings, that Christian Mahogany was one of the fallback Lions options on my Lions preference list for Round 3 (in essence much later in the Round, as a result of the Lions trading down from Pick #61, in the latter part of Round 2).
I'm pleasantly surprised the Lions were able to draft Christian Mahogany with Pick # 210, in the latter part Round 6. I certainly didn't envision Mahogany lasting even close to that spot of the draft. This probably was the Lions best value pick of the draft.
Like the first 5 players the Lions selected in the 2024 Draft, Christian Mahogany is a great Lions culture fit. He's a throwback type of player, who would have fit in the NFL decades ago.
While Mahogany probably doesn't have the versatility to be an effective Tackle or Center in the NFL, he has experience as a starter at both Guard positions.
Mahogany's size is more than enough for a Guard, especially since he has 33 1/2 " arm length, which is slightly above average for a Guard. As long as Mahogany maintains his leverage, he should be a plus power blocker. Considering Mahogany has significant lateral limitations, his track record as a pass blocker is extraordinary. Especially, since he played his final season (2023) with Boston College, after tearing his ACL in the Spring of 2022. In the NFL, Mahogany will be challenged as a pass blocker against high quality competition. But if he maximizes his pass blocking technique or comes close, I think the Lions can win with him. On the move as a run blocker, Mahogany needs to work to stay under control and maintain his leverage, otherwise he's going to continue to have balance issues. I'm optimistic Mahogany will respond favorably to Hank Fraley's coaching.
I believe Mahogany has the long term potential to be a winning level starting Guard, especially at RG. My guess is he's going to win a spot on the Lions opening day 53 man roster.
