Unfortunately. Desmond Trufant didn't come close to remaining relatively healthy in 2020. It was very likely that Trufant would be released and near certain that he wouldn't be playing in 2021 under the terms of contract he signed last March with the Lions. Trufant turns 31 in September. Combined with his injury history in recent seasons, he's not a good fit for a team like the Lions looking long term.

I wish Desmond Trufant well. He probably will get another opportunity from another NFL team ( though at far less favorable contract terms ).

When considering that Desmond Trufant missed plenty of practice time because of the hamstring injury and that he probably was never recovered from when he suffered the hamstring injury in the season opener vs. the Bears, it's not surprising that he struggled for the most part.

The $6.2 million salary cap savings for the Lions when Desmond Trufant is released is a good start in the Lions freeing up salary cap space. Yet, much more freed up salary cap space will be needed.

No surprise at all that the Lions were unable to trade Desmond Trufant.

It's likely that Matt Patricia provided Bill Belichick an overall favorable opinion of Desmond Trufant. A relative healthy version of Trufant could turn out to be a bargain for the Patriots ( or another team ).
