Dan Campbell knows Lions have 'so much stuff to clean up' after Week 1 loss ………….

49ers 41, Lions 33 : Game 1 (2021 )

I'm not questioning the collective decisions by Dan Campbell, Anthony Lynn, and Duce Staley. Yet, the Lions not scoring a point on the team's two first possessions was very costly.
Granted, the Lions came pretty close to send this game to OT, despite being down 38-10 and 41-17. It's not likely though that this Lions team will even come within 8 points, with a chance to tie the game, if the Lions are in similar uphill situations the remainder of the season. This is not the Matthew Stafford Lions when quick scores were often the norm..

Late coaching decisions haunt Detroit Lions in stunning loss to Ravens ………..... The Lions were in a difficult situation after the completion to Kalif Raymond into the red zone ( 14 yard line, two timeouts remaining for the Ravens ). Any result other than getting a 1st Down that wasn't a TD, was a potential recipe' for disaster ( even a short FG wasn't a sure thing but it was the least risky outcome. ). If the Lions scored a TD, with the Ravens having a timeout, there was risk. Any stoppage of the clock beyond the 2 minute warning and Ravens allotted remaining timeouts could have realistically cost the Lions the game.
Think back to when Drew Stanton replaced an injured Matthew Stafford during the 2010 home game against the Jets. An incomplete pass by Stanton gave the Jets around extra 40 seconds. That very likely was the difference in the Jets getting a game tying FG and an eventual OT victory.
I give the Ravens Defensive Coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale credit for having all 11 Ravens Defenders pretty close to the line of scrimmage when the Lions ran the ball on the team's final series of downs. This is something the Lions didn't do against the Bears in the Thanksgiving Day loss to the Bears a few seasons ago ( 2018 ). It made no sense for a Safety being relatively deep on the plays. A first down was going to all but officially end that game. It did. As disappointing as yesterday's loss was, the Ravens players and coaches deserve credit for pulling off the improbable.
The one thing I question with the late game strategy yesterday is the Lions not going with a 4 man rush on the 4th and 19 play. The decision to go with a 3 man rush easily could have been the difference in Aaron Rodgers' desperation pass in the end zone becoming a TD to TE Richard Rodgers in the December, 2015 loss to the Packers at the end of the game. A 3 man rush might have been the difference for Lamar Jackson to complete the 4th and 19 pass to Sammy Watkins.

Dan Campbell on trusting his defense: 'I felt like we were going to shut them down'
……….
The communication mistake on the 4th and 19 play is a painful lesson for the Lions coaches and players. It's much more pleasant to learn after a win. But I think the loss will make the lessons from the mistake ( and other mistakes on the game ) stick in the minds of coaches and players.
If the Lions were to lose a game on such a devastating way, it's better that it happened early in a long rebuild than much later on ( 2022 season and beyond ) when the loss could have been the difference in an entire season.

Dan Campbell has an in-game clock management advisor
………..
Having Clock Management input after a game and before the next game is something I believe is necessary for an NFL HC and for Coordinators. In addition, I think it's necessary during games. This is something Dan Campbell should try to expand on, with his Coordinates also in communication with Jon Dykema during games.

Detroit Lions' Dan Campbell: 'I'm so over' missed delay of game flag vs. Ravens
………
In addition to the NFL being no help with clarity regarding the Play Clock, it can't be assumed what would have happened if there was a Delay of Game Penalty. The Ravens might have successfully completed a pass that would have stopped the clock, the Lions might have committed a Defensive Penalty, etc. It can't be assumed that a lack of Delay of Penalty call cost the Lions the game. The Lions history of losing games in bizarre ways reinforces my opinion.

Dan Campbell: 'We need a lot of red zone work' after disastrous day in Chicago

Bears 24, Lions 14 : Game 4 ( 2021 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1207/bears-24-lions-game-2021
Until the Lions final drive against the Ravens, in which the Lions were trying to take time off the game clock, and the Ravens had 11 players in or near the box, the Lions were at or near the top of Red Zone Efficiency. I believe the injury to Frank Ragnow on the Lions first drive of the Bears game, that ended his day on the field, had a major adverse affect on the Lions Red Zone struggles against the Bears. But it was certainly not the only issue.
With both Frank Ragnow and Taylor Decker likely out for the upcoming game in Minnesota, I'm not confident the Lions Red Zone performance will improve. If the Lions don't spend enough time on working on early downs / non red zone situations, the Lions chances of even getting into the red zone will be reduced substantially..
Defensively, it's been a struggle in the Red Zone all season. In addition, not having Trey Flowers and losing Romeo Okwara early on the Bears second drive, proved very costly in the red zone and overall.

Dan Campbell vouches for defensive playcalling after another late Lions collapse ………..
This thread relates to the following thread:
Vikings 19, Lions 17: Game # 5 ( 2021 ).G.Joseph 54 Yd GW FG
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1215/vikings-lions-game-2021-joseph
I'm not going to fault Jerry Jacobs for either play on the Vikings eventual game winning FG drive.
On the 3 man rush play that put the Vikings into game winning FG Range, Jacobs and Amani Oruwariye were using an outside technique to guard the sideline. WR Dede Westbrook, who Oruwariye was covering, also was opened at around the same length ( 36 yard line ) as Adam Theilen was. Kirk Cousins had an easy completion opportunity either way.
Basically, the Lions strategy on that play was if the Vikings execute effectively on the play, which there was a high probability of them doing, put Greg Joseph in a situation for around a 53 to 55 yard FG, with the game on the Online. The fact that Joseph made a 55 yard FG in the 4th QTR, with plenty of room to spare, demonstrated that Joseph was more than capable of making the FG.

Inside Dan Campbell’s daring 2-point conversion, a gamble that nearly stole a win for Detroit
………
I thought back to the 2002 season when Mike Tice was in his first season full season Vikings HC, after he became their interim HC during the 2001 season.
During the 2002 season at the time the Vikings had the longest road game losing streak in NFL History. A record the Lions broke twice since then. The Vikings were playing in New Orleans. They scored a TD at or very near the end of regulation time. That put them down by 1 point. Tice elected to go for the 2 point conversion. I can't recall the play call ( for some reason I think it was a running play ) and who scored on the 2 point conversion play. But the Vikings then record road game losing streak was finally over.
Unfortunately, the Lions overall losing streak reached 9 yesterday. But like Tice, Dan Campbell, in his first season as a non-interim NFL HC, decided to go for 2 points when a PAT attempt was at the very least the far more conventional play.

The Detroit Lions are enough to make any grown person cry
…………
As difficult as the first 5 games and weeks of the regular season have been for the Lions, I agree with Dan Campbell that this adversity will pay dividends for the Lions in the future. Future Lions leaders will emerge from this season. The team will be more equipped to mentally handle adversity than most other NFL teams.

To punt or not to punt, the question for Dan Campbell on critical 4th downs
……….
A solid case can be made for going for a 1st Down in that 4th and 4 situation. The same regarding Punting in that situation. With the Lions Defense and Special Teams keeping the Lions in the game, pass protection struggles for the Lions, and Quintez Cephus out with what turned out to be a broken Collarbone, Dan Campbell's decision to punt is understandable.

The Hangover II?
………
How the Lions respond in the first quarter of the Bengals game will be a measuring stick in terms of the progress the Lions are making as this season is moving along. A Lions fast start is very important!
