Good job by Sheila Ford Hamp in firing BOTH Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia at this time. Their collective track record with the Lions from 2018 to the present speaks for itself. Though it remains to be seen what transpires, SFH understood that the Lions results were a collective failure by Quinn and Patricia.

Regarding the article, Jim Caldwell had the best winning % of Lions non-interim HCs since the NFL-AFL 1970 merger. Potsy Clark, Buddy Parker, and Dutch Clark all had better a winning % than Caldwell.

Also, the Lions did have a loss to a losing record team ( Bengals ) in 2017. That was the 2nd to last game of the season. The loss eliminated the Lions from playoff contention and gave Bob Quinn the opening to fire Jim Caldwell after the regular season. Numerous injuries on the Lions Offensive Line in Cincinnati proved very costly. Yet, unlike the recent Carolina and Houston games in which Lions injuries were a major factor, the Lions were in the Bengals game until pretty late. There was also a bad non pass interference call that worked against the Lions in the last few minutes of that game. I strongly disagreed with Caldwell being fired by Quinn.

As much as I prefer that the Sheila Ford Hamp would hire a team President with a football background on the NFL level, I had no realistic hope that Rod Wood would be removed from his current position.

I'm not sure who is going to have final say with player transactions for the final 5 weeks of the season. I don't anticipate any contract extensions. The next Lions GM should have final say on those decisions.

It's crystal clear that Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia didn't handle situations well with some players. Not to memtion Quinn's comments from his press conference the day ( January 1. 2018 ) he fired Jim Caldwell ).

The Lions next GM and Head Coach have a long road ahead to build the Lions into a playoff team that has sustained success. It remains to be seen how many players on the current roster, including 2021 FAs, fit the next regimes plans both in terms of skills, and the salary cap.

More than any other player addition by Bob Quinn as Lions GM, drafting Hawaii LB Jahlini Tavai with pick # 43 in Round 2 of the 2019 Draft summarizes why the tandem of Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia failed in Detroit.

Even though the hiring of Bob Quinn didn't work out well, I definitely believe that Sheila Ford Hamp and Rod Wood getting a head start on the selection process of the Lions next GM was necessary. That much more with the need to get outside help with the GM selection process.

I would like to see Chris Spielman be hired as something along the lines of Lions Director of Football Operations. With Spielman overseeing the Lions GM search. If Chris Spielman hired a GM that uses many similar strategies that Chris Spielman's brother Rick does as Vikings GM, the Lions roster would likely immensely improve over the next few seasons.

Woaw, this is undoubtedly the breaking news of the day !
I am not aware of the GM market so I'm unable to give an informed opinion about who would be best for the Lions but I guess the Lions brass already has some touches.

Have you watched the "media sessions" of Sheila ?

Firstly, she could have made a simple statement instead of a Q&A ... if you don't have answers, do not ask for questions (all the more so as she didn't seem comfortable answering the media).
It was way too early to disclose any information on the process anyway.
She was even asked about Stafford's future    

Secondly, near the end of the interview, Rod "bigmouth" Wood popped up on the split screen and started to answer questions on his own, extending the session which was suppose to end.
Just after the questions of the journalist, Rod Wood immediately answered, ghosting Sheila.
I disliked this attitude for 2 reasons, it was discourteous (it was Sheila's session and she is first in the organization / hierarchy), and it gave me the impression that Rod Wood was the one calling the shots in the organization.

She still conceded that the last 2 games were the triggering point ... obviously, these games were supposed to be a cakewalk, the easiest part of the schedule

Frenchy, I listened to the media session with Sheila while walking. This was her 2nd media session. Sheila comes across as authentic, which I appreciate. Under difficult circumstances, I thought Sheila did well.

Good observations regarding Rod Wood. Clearly, the Ford Family trusts him and they very likely have gone along with most of ( maybe even all of his recommendations ).

Even beyond the Lions losing the last two games, which clearly was not acceptable to Sheila, the fact that the Lions lost by 20 and 16 points respectively probably contributed to her decision to fire Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia.

Under the circumstances of what led up to Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia being fired by the Lions, I'm glad many in need will benefit. Props to DeShaun Watson for his efforts with the charity.

DeShaun Watson has developed into a great QB, even with a bottom tier running game. The Texans are in tremendous shape at the most important NFL position.

Contrast this with Mike Tomlin deciding to keep Dick LeBeau and his 3-4 Based Zone Blitz Defensive scheme in place when he became Steelers HC in 2006. This despite the fact that Tomlin's then recent seasons work was a Defensive Coordinator in the Tampa Two Defensive System, led to him being interviewed by the Steelers.

As much as Matt Patricia failed as Lions HC, Bob Quinn is the one who fired Jim Caldwell and hired Matt Patricia. Then working together with Patricia on a shared vision.
