Detroit Lions sign Taylor Decker to six-year, $85 million contract

Taylor Decker quotes/ info: 2020 season
This is definitely a very good decision by Taylor Decker. He was guaranteed $10.35 million for the 2020 season, under the 5th year option. Decker adds over $ 27 million in guaranteed money. Considering the uncertainty with the COVID-19 situation and the adverse affect it will have on future salary cap dollars, this is a very good contract for Decker.
For the Lions, there's significant risk in large part because of why it's favorable for Decker. If Decker remains relatively healthy the vast majority of the time in the next 5 seasons, it likely will be a good contract for the Lions. However, if Decker misses a sizable amount of time or more, and his skills are adversely affected because of an injury from that point on, the Lions likely lose out from a value standpoint.
The question now becomes, did the Lions accept these contract terms largely because there's a very realistic chance the Franchise Tag in 2021 will be needed for Kenny Golladay, based on how contract negotiations are going with his agent? If Golladay isn't signed by the season opener, the answer to the question probably is yes.

Lions 26, Cardinals 23: Game # 3 ( 2020 )

Compared to the opener last season, much improved performance by Taylor Decker against Chandler Jones and the overall Cardinals Defense. Unlike that game, Decker was relatively healthy for the game in Arizona last Sunday.

At the time, I thought it was a bit overpaying him ... then came the LT Ronnie Stanley's contract in Baltimore with 20 millions / year and around 70 millions guaranteed , so I guess it's well-spent money.
In contrast, Hala Vaitai's contract seems inflated considering his performances and lingering wounds ?

The 3 LTs that went in the first half of the 1st Round of the 2016 Draft all had big paydays for their 2nd NFL contract. Compared to Laremy Tunsil and Ronnie Stanley, the Lions contract with Taylor Decker is very favorable. That's not a knock on the other 2 LTs.
In Hali Vaitai's first season with the Lions, the team is not getting good value. That's an understatement. In fairness to Big V, he has been dealing with a foot injury that has kept him out or limited him most of the season through this point in time. My gut feeling is if the Lions brass knew that Tyrell Crosby would be vastly improved this season, the Lions wouldn't have made a substantial investment in Big V.

Not even Taylor Decker and Detroit’s offensive line were safe from rough day in Carolina

Panthers 20, Lions 0: Game # 10 ( 2020 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/820/panthers-20-lions-game-2020
The 4th QTR struggles the Lions had in pass protection at Carolina reminded me to a large extent the of the Lions pass blocking in Green Bay back in Game 2. As well as some games in past seasons vs. the Vikings under Mike Zimmer. The Lions were fortunate Matthew Stafford apparently didn't suffer an additional injury.
Much like I expressed regarding PFF this morning, analytical numbers can be misleading at times. Granted, the Lions receivers collectively struggled to get open. But the pass protection in the 4th QTR and as the 3rd QTR moved along was not close to being ample. The Lions had to leave in an extra blocker ( sometimes two ) for added protection. Which made it more difficult for receivers going into patterns, get open.
It also gets back to the overall run blocking not being good enough in this game. Even beyond Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson not adding significantly to the running game.

As I've said, D'Andre Swift has the ability to make something happen out of nothing because the line doesn't provide much push, especially on power play. That said, Houston Texans is last in rushing defence with more than 1500 yards allowed / 5.1 yards per carry.

The Texans are coming off a much better run Defense performance in which they gave up 86 rushing yards, for a 3.6 yards per carry in their 27-20 win over the Patriots. Whether they turned the corner against the run will be determined to a very large extent on how they do against D'Andre Swift, if he plays.

Lions’ Taylor Decker, fresh off breakout year, rises as voice ahead of uncertain offseason
....
It's highly likely that Taylor Decker is at the very least voicing his opinion to Rod Wood that he thinks it's in the best interest for the Lions to retain Darrell Bevell, Hank Fraley, and Matthew Stafford. It's good to see Decker step up on the field this season and in taking a proactive approach in voicing his opinions about what he thinks the direction of the Lions should be ( at least to some extent ).

The key here is "to some extent" ... he surely have the right to voice his opinion to the Lions brass ... spreading out in the media is double-edged though.
