It seems like there's more than a 50-50 chance that Matthew Stafford will be kept out the remainder of the season. If the Lions lose to the Bears today and then at home to the NFC East leading Cowboys next week, the Lions would be 3-6-1. Even a 6 game winning streak to close out the regular season probably then wouldn't be enough for the Lions to reach the playoffs.

What doesn't add up is the injury that Matthew Stafford was dealing with prior to the Chiefs game was a hip injury. The Lions can't provide false information on the NFL Injury Report without risking a major penalty ( loss of one or more draft picks very possible, in addition to a heavy fine. ).

Matthew Stafford is as tough as nails. A negative ramification of that is the back injury he suffered on this play that will keep him out at least for today's game in Chicago.

Even if the Lions were in tbe thick of tbe playoff race, the Lions can't put Matthew Stafford or any player at a risk level that would endanger their long term health.

With the Lions all but eliminated from playoff contention, an added level of caution with Stafford makes a great amount of sense. The Lions injury situation other than Stafford is acute to the point that he would be at much more risk with the team the Lions fielded as the Bears game went on than with the team that the Lions had on the field a few weeks ago.
