Lions slight favorites for opener, but most bettors taking Rams to cover
..........
Considering that the Lions beat the LA Rams by 1 point, 24-23, in the 1st Round of the 2023 season playoffs, the 2024 SNF season opener vs. the Rams shapes up as a major challenge for the Lions. This is even with future 1st Ballot HOFer DT Aaron Donald retiring as an NFL player and the Rams being without starting LT Alaric Jackson. The Rams Defense has plenty of question marks but their Offense is amongst the best in the NFL. A high scoring game is a very realistic possibility. The Lions Defense is substantially improved on paper. However, the unit has yet to play a game together. Even practice time for the unit was greatly limited this summer, because of injuries.

Rams at Lions (-3.5)
No Aaron Donald. No Raheem Morris. Preseason injury issues galore. Advantage, Lions.
Florio: Lions, 30-24.
Simms: Lions, 30-20.

I'm anticipating a high scoring game but have optimism that the Lions Defense will be able to limit the LA Rams Offense more than the Rams Defense will be able to limit the Lions Offense.

Rams new wave of pass rushers is a new challenge for the Lions

With this being the first game for both teams, I'm expecting both teams to be well prepared going into the game. The Lions advantage of having more experience on the Offensive Line and overall Offense, compared to the LA Rams Defense could easily prove critical though.

6 key matchups to watch in Rams vs. Lions on Sunday night

Chances are good that the LA Rams will use S Quentin Lake that much more as a Slot CB in Detroit on Sunday Night, with Cobie Durant limited in practice the last 2 days with a hamstring injury. The Rams have good depth at Safety, hence they have this flexibility. Their greater issue is the loss of starting outside CB Darius Williams, who was placed on IR this week. UFA CB Ahkello Witherspoon wasn't re-signed by the Rams and remains a free agent. Former Lions CB Jerry Jacobs, who the Rams signed in late July, was Waived Injured.
The Rams WR unit is amongst their top team strengths. The Lions Secondary and supporting cast has their work cut out for them in this game.'
With Brian Branch expected to be used at Safety much more, Amik Robertson and rookie Ennis Rakestraw will probably be the Lions main options at Slot CB against the Rams. Ifeatu Melifonwu will probably see plenty of action as a Slot CB and/ or a Big Nickle this season. With Iffy dealing with an ankle injury that kept him out of practice for a couple of weeks and Iffy being limited in practice yesterday, even if he plays in this game on Defense, I think it will mostly be as an insurance policy, if needed because of injury.

Rams activate OT A.J. Arcuri from practice squad for Week 1

A.J. Arcuri played his college ball with Michigan St. and was a 7th Round Pick in 2022. He played in 8 games for the Rams in 2022 (1 start), after being the 2022 regular season on the PS, and was on the Rams Practice Squad in 2023.

Lions announce uniform combination for season opener against Rams

Good choice by the Lions organization in going with the Blue Jerseys. These new blue jerseys are terrific! They are traditional, with some subtle new changes that are fit. The numbers are much easier to identify than the blue jerseys the Lions had the previous 6 seasons.

This is certainly high praise by the LA Rams new Defensive Line Coach/ Running Game Coordinator.
Kyle Williams was a 5th Round Pick by the Buffalo Bills. He played his entire 13 year career with the Bills. Not many Defensive Lineman play 13 seasons in the NFL. Very few play that many seasons with the same team. Much fewer that accomplish this last to the 5th Round of a draft.
