The surprises on this end regarding the Lions DT situation, are Broderic Martin being placed on the IR-to-return list, with John Cominsky being on the initial 53 man roster, and the Lions releasing DT Kyle Peko. Having expressed this, I'm not aware of any difference in the status of a player on IR-to-return, compared to being placed on IR, after a roster reaches 53 players, following the cutdown. It's near certain that Cominsky is headed to IR in the next few days at the latest. I strongly believe that Peko will be re-signed by the Lions in the near future. Probably, as early as sometime this week.
I'm not sure how long the Lions now believe Martin will be unable to practice, because of the injury. At the very least, he can't practice until after Game # 4 (vs. Seattle on MNF). The knee injury is at the very least a significant setback for Martin in his development with the Lions.
