Lions 2024 season preview
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/2177/lions-2024-training-camp-preview
QB Jake Fromm was signed by the Lions since this article was written.
The health of Hendon Hooker will probably determine whether the Lions begin the regular season with 2 QBs or whether a 3rd QB being on the opening day 53 man roster gets serious consideration.
I agree with 4 Lions RBs surviving the cutdown to 53, with David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Craig Reynolds, and Sione Vaki being on the Lions initial 53 man roster. I expect the Lions to keep 2 RBs on the Practice Squad much more often than not.
WR Antoine Green was placed on Injured Waivers earlier this week.
While I believe Daurice Fountain would be the Lions # 4 WR in the team's pecking order if the decision was made today, I can envision the Lions only keeping 4 WRs on the initial 53 man roster. Someone must step up to earn the # 5 spot.
Though I believe James Mitchell would be on the Lions initial 53 man roster as a # 4 TE if the decision was made today, he's far from a lock at this time.
I agree with the 9 Offensive Lineman that Jeff Risdon projects to survive the Cutdown to 53. Dan Skipper will very likely be with the Lions this season. Whether he's on the initial 53 man roster is up in the air. So much could depend on the Lions injury situation the next couple of weeks.
Nate Lynn was placed on IR earlier this week.
Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, and Josh Paschal will be on the Lions initial 53 man roster, if they remain relatively healthy. James Houston seems on the roster bubble (around 50-50 to survive the cutdown to 53). The other Edge players mentioned are all in the mix. At this time, my guess is the Lions will go with 5 Edge players on the Initial 50 man roster.
I agree with the DT roster assessment.
DaRon Gilbert was released earlier today. It's possible he could be re-signed by the Lions and end up on the P.S.
The only uncertainty at LB regarding the initial 53 man roster seems to be whether the Lions will go with a 6th LB? The competition between Ben Niemann and Malik Jefferson for a possible initial 53 man roster spot, probably will come down to the pre-season finale vs. Pittsburgh. One of them could easily end up on the Lions Practice Squad at some point this season.
At this time, I believe the Lions will go with 6 CBs on the initial 53 man roster. With Steven Gilmore having a slight edge over Khalil Dorsey at this time.
I believe that Brandon Joseph would be the Lions # 4 Safety on the Lions initial 53 man roster, if the Cutdown to 53 was today. Morice Norris probably is behind Brandon Joseph and C.J. Moore, after his struggles in the pre-season opener at the Giants.
While Scott Daly probably has the edge to survive the cut, compared to UDRFA Hogan Hatten, the competition could easily come down to the final pre-season game vs. the Steelers.

Projecting the Lions' 2024 53-man roster after 3 weeks of training camp

This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions at Chiefs preview: Pre-Season Game # 2 (2024)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/2214/lions-chiefs-preview-season-game
An update from the initial message of this thread: DaRon Gilbert was placed on the Waived Injured List.
I don't think Nate Sudfeld warrants a spot on the Lions 53 man roster.
Unless Craig Reynolds drops off considerably before the end of the pre-season, he has a good to very good chance of surviving the cutdown to 53.
If the cutdown to 53 decisions were made at this time, the Lions wouldn't have as many as 5 WRs on the initial 53 man roster.
Michael Niese's interior O-Line versatility helps his roster cause substantially.
Time is running out for Christian Mahogany to be on the Lions 53 roster at the beginning of the regular season. With the Lions already carrying rookie Giovanni Manu, the Lions can't afford to have another Offensive Lineman on the 53 man roster who isn't ready to contribute on the Offensive Line in regular season games.
Kindle Vildor had a strong week of practice. Right now, he would survive the cutdown to 53.

Lions 53-man roster projection ahead of Detroit's final preseason game
..........
This thread relates to the following threads:
Lions vs. Steelers preview: Pre-Season Game # 3 ( 2024)
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/2217/lions-steelers-preview-season-game
Lions 24, Chiefs 23: Pre-Season Game # 2 ( 2024 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/2216/lions-chiefs-season-game-2024
At this time, I believe an initial Lions roster spot is going to come down to James Houston vs. Isaac Ukwu.
If nothing changes significantly in tomorrow's pre-season game vs. the Steelers, I believe 6 CBs will be on the Lions initial 53 man roster. With Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey being the # 5 and # 6 CBs, respectively.
C.J. Moore isn't subject to the Waiver Claim process next week. When combining that, with Moore apparently behind at least 4 Safeties in the Lions Safety pecking order, I currently believe he's going to far short of being on the Lions initial 53 man roster. If Moore doesn't end up signing a 53 man roster contract with another team, the Lions & Moore will likely agree to a P.S. contract. With Moore being elevated from the P.S. for 1 to 3 early season games.

Dave Birkett's Detroit Lions 53-man roster prediction before cut day
............
I agree with the way Dave Birkett would provide at QB with the Lions, if it was his call.
With Donovan Peoples-Jones not subject to the waiver claim process next week and DJJ having a disappointing summer, at this point in time, I don't think he warrants being on the Lions initial 53 man roster.
Parker Hesse has played better this summer than the other TEs in the mix for the # 3 and possibly a # 4 TE spot. I think either Hesse or James Mitchell will be on the Lions Game Day roster with the LA Rams. What happens before then is much harder to predict.
Ben Niemann and/ or Ty Summers will likely be on the Lions Practice Squad, if only 5 LBs are on the 53 man roster.
I currently agree with Dave Birkett's roster projections at QB, RB, Defensive Line, LB, DB, and Specialists.

Projecting the Lions' 2024 53-man roster ahead of preseason finale
.........
I believe another Interior Offensive Lineman will be on the initial 53 man roster, with Kingsley Eguakun having a slight edge over Michael Niese. If Colby Sorsdal sees action at Guard vs. the Steelers tomorrow, that might change my line of thinking about Eguakun or Niese being on the Lions initial 53 man roster.
Brandon Joseph should be on the Lions 53 man roster, based on what has transpired going into the final pre-season game. The Lions could very realistically lose him in the Waiver Claims process, if he's exposed to waivers.

Lions Final 53-Man Roster Projection
...........
Malcolm Rodriguez and Ifeatu Melifonwu aren't eligible to be placed on the PUP list, because they already active since the beginning of training camp. Both are candidates to land on I.R., sometime this week after the initial 53 man roster is set.
