NFL Draft Preview: Defensive Lineman / Edge ( 2024 )

I expressed the following on February 26 in the 'NFL Draft Preview: Defensive Lineman / Edge ( 2024 )' thread:
Unless Johnny Newton gets unfavorable medical designation by most NFL teams, he's probably not going to last to Pick # 29. Unless Newton is still available within a few picks of Pick # 29, I would be very surprised if the Lions trade up for him. Right now, it's not likely that the Lions will be the team that ends up drafting him. If Newton is still available with Pick # 29 and his medical report by the Lions medical staff is such that they expect his foot not to cause him problems over the long term, I think he would be at or very near the top of the list of the players the Lions consider.
It seems like the draft stock perception of Jer'Zhan 'Johnny' Newton has dropped somewhat since late February. It's probably mostly because of concerns regarding Newton's size. With Newton coming off foot surgery, hence not participating in workouts, that probably has also caused his draft stock perception to drop somewhat.
No one that I'm aware of is comparing Newton to Aaron Donald. Yet, because the then St. Louis Rams drafted Donald with Pick # 13 in Round 1 of the 2014 Draft, with Brad Holmes a major part of their evaluation process for College players, I believe that Newton is a prime candidate to be Pick # 29 by the Lions(if he falls to that spot). I'm still at least somewhat skeptical that Newton will last to Pick # 29. But the chances of Newton being available at # 29 appear to have increased since late February.
A part of the Lions decision making process regarding Newton is the assessment of the team brass on the likelihood of the Lions and DT Alim McNeill agreeing on a contract extension. McNeill is entering the final season of his rookie contract. If the Lions select Newton, it doesn't mean that McNeill is all but out the door. But it probably means the Lions would be preparing for the realistic possibility of McNeill playing for another team in the 2025 season.
