Marcus Davenport, who is listed at 6'6"/265, looks the very close to the prototype 4-3 DE. Much more than anything else that's prevented Davenport from living up to his former Pick # 14 draft billing has been injuries. I can't recall Davenport suffering any injury that would have significantly lessened his physical ability. But he's missed 3 or more regular season games in all 6 of his NFL seasons.
A huge positive is the familiarity that Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn have with Davenport from their Saints days. There was at least one unfavorable report about Davenport last season regarding in essence not having urgency in getting back to game action as a result of the ankle injury that landed him on IR after 4 games. The fact Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn have seen Davenport up close daily during his first 3 NFL seasons leads me to believe the Lions brass is more than comfortable that Davenport is a good culture fit for the Lions.
As talented as Davenport is when relatively healthy, if the numbers Dave Birkett reported are correct, I'm surprised the Lions gave Davenport a $ 6.5 million base salary. This would speak volumes to the talent that Davenport has. The Lions clearly see Davenport is someone who would be the team's # 2 or # 3 DE/ Edge Player.
