No surprise that the Lions didn't tag anyone this year.

CB Jaylon Johnson already signed a 4 year contract with the Bears. While Johnson might have received a better contract offer from the Bears close to the July 15 multi-year deal deadline, to his credit, his contract situation won't be a distraction this off-season for Johnson and the Bears. With the highly likely probability of Johnson participating in the Bears off-season program, including OTAs and the Mandatory Minicamp.

It would be very surprising if the Lions sign any of the Tagged players to an offer sheet.

CB L’Jarius Sneed is the most likely of the tagged players the Lions would trade for. With, DE/ Edge Brian Burns and DE/ Josh Allen the only two other tagged players I can realistically see the Lions end up trading for this off-season.

Justin Madubuike is coming off a great season. Clearly, the Ravens brass believes that Madubuike will continue to be a differential interior Defensive Lineman. As much as Madubuike could have helped the Lions if he became available on the open market without draft pick compensation, the cost to exceed the Ravens contract offer would have probably exceeded the value Madubuike would have brought to the table.

With the Lions trading with the Bucs for CB Carlton Davis AND the Lions releasing Cam Sutton as a resulted of what's transpired off the field regarding Sutton in Florida, my guess is the Lions aren't currently a serious player for Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed. Even more than the trade compensation factor with the Chiefs is the contract factor. Especially, when factoring in that Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Alim McNeill are entering the final season of their current contracts with the Lions. In addition, a new contract for Penei Sewell will be necessary by no later than in 2025.

Chiefs trade CB L'Jarius Sneed to Titans

I understand why the Lions didn't top the trade compensation the Titans gave to the Chiefs for L'Jarius Sneed. However, the contract Sneed received from the Titans is somewhat less than I thought Sneed would end up getting from an NFL team. I would have been comfortable for a similar outcome for the Lions, regarding trade compensation and contract for Sneed, even knowing the Lions own salary cap / roster situation.

Inside the deal signed by Jaguars pass rusher Josh Allen

Josh Allen was probably in the range of good player to a near very good player. prior to the 2023 season. In the 2023 season, Allen was one of the best Edge players in the entire NFL. With Allen turning 27 this summer, the Jaguars are clearly banking on Allen player at a legit Pro Bowl level for at least the next 3 seasons. Josh Allen and Off the Ball LB Foyesade Oluokun (one of my favorite non-Lions players) are clearly the Jaguars best 2 Defensive players. Foye Oluikun recently signed a contract extension with the Jags. The contracts the Jags gave both players make sense.

It's fair to say that Aidan Hutchinson is on a path to receiving a contract extension in 2025 or 2026 from the Lions that exceeds what Josh Allen received from the Jaguars.
