Lions 2024 NFL Draft report: Jacob Cowing, Wide Receiver, Arizona
.........
The lack of size, combined with a 9.5% drop-rate, are my concerns with Jacob Cowing as a draft prospect for the Lions to consider. Also, Cowing has been ordinary as a Punt Returner and has very little Kickoff Return Experience. At this time, I think the earliest he should be considered by the Lions is if the Lions acquire a later part of the 4th Round Pick.

Lions 2024 NFL Draft report: Roman Wilson, Wide Receiver, Michigan
..........
At this time, I believe the Lions would have to draft Roman Wilson at the latest in the range of the 3rd Round Pick the Lions acquired from the Vikings in the T.J. Hockenson trade. He might not even last to the Lions 2nd Round Pick, which is in the latter part of Round 2. Because of the versatility Wilson provides on Offense and that he's more polished than the vast majority of higher end NFL WR Draft Prospects, he's probably worth seriously considering by the Lions with the team's 2nd Round Pick.

Lions 2024 NFL Draft report: Bub Means, Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh
..........
Regarding whether Bub Means will get serious consideration in the latter rounds by the Lions, so much will probably depend on the team brass evaluation of Means as a blocker and what his overall upside potential is? His potential regarding getting separation is likely one of the key question marks with Means? At this time, the earliest I can picture the Lions drafting him is with the team's 5th Round Pick or a several picks higher. If Means is available at that point of the draft, my guess is the Lions are going to prefer one or more other options.

Lions 2024 NFL draft report: Johnny Wilson, Wide Receiver, Florida State
...........
At the Combine, Johnny Wilson measured at 6'6 3/8", weighing 231 pounds. He was timed at 4.52 in the 40 yard dash.
Most likely, Johnny Wilson will be drafted in the 3rd or 4th Round. I would be surprised if the Lions selected him with Pick # 73 in the earlier part of Round 3. The Lions next current scheduled Pick is # 163. in Round 5. It's highly unlikely Wilson will last that long. For Wilson to be drafted by the Lions, a trade down from Pick # 73 or an acquired pick from a trade earlier in the draft are the most likely paths.
Because Johnny Wilson has difficulty getting separation, he has a drop rate on the high side, and his TD numbers are ordinary for someone as tall as Wilson, with a 37" Vertical Jump, it's probably best that the Lions don't end up drafting Wilson. If he unexpectedly falls to pick # 163, then Wilson would probably be well worth considering based on risk/reward. So much though depends on whether the Lions draft a WR earlier in the draft, who has at least some of Wilson's skill set?

Lions draft prospect of the day: Javon Baker, WR, UCF
......
Even if the Lions still had Pick # 92, which is well into the second half of Round 3, I don't think Javon Baker would be a good enough option at that point of the draft. His lack of vertical speed/ acceleration, combined with not much elusiveness after the catch, and very limited Special Teams experience, all work against Baker. While Baker will probably be drafted in the Middle Rounds (Round 3, 4, or 5), the 5th Round is the earliest part of the draft that I currently believe the Lions would get enough value by selecting Baker.

Lions draft prospect of the day: Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas
.........
Adonai Mitchell will likely be selected in Round 1 and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's drafted before Pick # 29. The Cowboys and Chiefs are two teams that come to mind that I believe will have serious interest in Mitchell.
If Mitchell is available with Pick # 29, I'm anticipating the Lions going in another direction. Mitchell doesn't seem to have the grit and other intangible package that Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell seek.

Lions draft prospect of the day: Brenden Rice, WR, USC
...........
Because Breden Rice doesn't seem have the upside to be a starting caliber WR for a winning level team, I would be surprised if the Lions drafted Brenden Rice with Pick # 73, in Round 3.
It's possible, not close to probable, the Lions would consider Rice in a Trade Down from Pick # 85 to around Pick # 95. After around that part of the draft, if the Lions traded down from Pick #79 and didn't address WR yet, that's when I think Rice could under consideration for the Lions. My guess is Rice will be selected in the latter part of Round 3 through latter part of Round 4.

NFL draft: In another loaded WR class, teams wrestle with when to select pass catcher
..........
Ja'Lynn Polk (Washington) Roman Wilson (Michigan), Troy Franklin (Oregon), Ricky Pearsall (Florida), and Malachi Corley (Western Kentucky) are other WRs that I believe will be selected in Round 2. The Lions could realistically have interest in any of these WRs, if available with Pick # 61, near the end of Round 2. Polk or Franklin have been projected in the latter part of Round 1 by a small % of Mock Drafts that I have seen in recent weeks.
Luke McCaffrey, a younger brother of 49ers Pro Bowl RB Christian McCaffrey, and the son of former Giants and 49ers WR Ed McCaffrey, could be of serious interest to the Lions beginning with Pick # 164, in Round 5. Luke McCaffrey checks off all of the intangible boxes. He probably is a better fit as a Slot Receiver than as an Outside Receiver because of his frame, coupled with him not having big time vertical speed. If McCaffrey had a track record of being used as a Punt Return in College, I think he would have been drafted in Round 4. Maybe even in the latter part of Round 3. Round 5 seems like the most likely landing spot for McCaffrey.

Lions 2024 draft preview: Long-term need could justify receiver in early rounds
.........
This thread relates to the following thread:
Lions & WR Amon-Ra St. Brown agree to 4 yr contract ext.
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/2128/lions-amon-brown-agree-contract
With Amon-Ra St. Brown now in the Lions fold for 4 additional seasons at a premium rate, it's going to be more difficult to retain Jameson Williams long term if he even comes close to the player that Brad Holmes and co. envisioned when trading up with the Vikings from Pick # 32 to Pick # 12 in the 2022 Draft to select Williams.
Michigan WR Cornelius Johnson has better measurables than production, as a WR. Because Johnson has been a good blocker. he blocked 2 punts in 2021, and that he has plenty of upside potential, I can envision the Lions drafting him as early as Pick # 164, in Round 5 (if still available). My guess is Johnson will be drafted in Round 5, with the first half of Round 6 the next most likely part of the draft Johnson is selected in.
SE Missouri St. WR Ryan Flournoy is similar to Cornelius Johnson in terms of having good measurables but needing to improve greatly with route running. Flournoy has had better concentration (far less drops) but doesn't have much, if any college experience on Special Teams. Flournoy turns 25 in October. But for a Day 3 prospect, I don't think the age factor would influence a good GM/ Draft decision maker regarding when to draft him on Day 3, compared to the more typical prospect. Brad Holmes is certainly a good GM and then some. My guess is the most likely point of the draft Flourney will be drafted, is Round 6. Unless the Lions believe Flournoy can help the team on Special Teams, I don't think the Lions would draft him before Round 7 (if still available).
