.............
This new thread relates to the following threads:
Lions trade # 6 & # 81 to Cardinals for # 12, #34, & #168

Round 1a: RB Jahmyr Gibbs ( Alabama ) : Pick # 12 ( 2023 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1774/round-jahmyr-gibbs-alabama-pick
Round 1b: LB Jack Campbell ( Iowa ) : Pick # 18 ( 2023 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1775/round-jack-campbell-iowa-pick
Even though the Lions currently have three 2nd Round Picks (# 34, # 48, and # 55) and no 3rd Round Picks, it's realistically possible the Lions could end up back in the 3rd Round. Hence, I will include Round 3 options for the Lions as part of the discussion.
The following is my order of preference for the Lions, regarding the 20 players mentioned in the article:
1 Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State 2 Brian Branch, S, Alabama 3 O'Cyrus Torrence, OG, Florida 4 Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia 5 Steve Avila, G, TCU 6 Keeanu Benton DT, Wisconsin 7 Adetomiba Adebawore, DE-DT, Northwestern 8 Keion White, DE, Georgia Tech 9 Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee 10 Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame 11 Clark Phillips, CB, Utah 12 Jonathan Mingo, WR, Ole Miss 13 Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State 14 Quan Martin, S, Illinois 15 Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina 16 Cody Mauch, G, North Dakota State 17 Sydney Brown, S, Illinois 18 Michael Wilson, WR, Stanford 19 Isaiah McGuire, EDGE, Missouri 20 Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa
There are other players that I would include on the upper half of the list.
Some that come to mind at this time are as follows, in terms of preference for these players:
Will Levis, QB Kentucky Cedric Tillman WR Tennessee BJ Ojulari, DE-Edge LSU DJ Turner, CB, Michigan

2023 NFL draft: 15 fits for the Detroit Lions to watch on Day 2
............
Brian Branch and Julius Brents will probably get very serious consideration by the Lions because of their tangible impact plays (takeaways and/ or sacks).
South Carolina CB Cam Smith wasn't mentioned in either of the first 2 articles of this thread. Smith is someone I hope the Lions seriously consider in Round 2, as he can contribute on the outside or in the slot, has 6 career interception, and a blocked FG.
The following is my order of preference for the Lions regarding players mentioned in one or both articles and other players I have mentioned:
1 Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn St 2 Will Levis QB Kentucky (if medical reports are long term favorable). 3 Brian Branch, S, Alabama 4 O'Cyrus Torrence, OG, Florida 5 Cam Smith, CB South Carolina 6 Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia 7 BJ Ojulari, DE-Edge LSU 8 Steve Avila, G, TCU 9 DJ Turner, CB, Michigan 10 Keeanu Benton DT, Wisconsin 11 Adetomiba Adebawore, DE-DT, Northwestern 12 Keion White, DE, Georgia Tech 13 Cedric Tillman, WR, Tennessee 14 Julius Brents, CB Kansas St 15 Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee 16 Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame 17 Clark Phillips, CB, Utah 18 Rashee Rice, WR, SMU 19 8Jonathan Mingo, WR, Ole Miss 20 Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan St 21 Quan Martin, S, Illinois 22 Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina 23 Cody Mauch, G, North Dakota St 24 Sydney Brown, S, Illinois 25 Michael Wilson, WR, Stanford 26 Payne Durham, TE, Purdue 27 AT Perry, WR, Wake Forest 28 Isaiah McGuire, EDGE, Missouri 29 Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa

Twelve prospects who could fit the Lions on Day 2 of the NFL Draft
...........
Hendon Hooker is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered in December. I would be surprised if Hooker is cleared for Training Camp of the team who ends up drafting him. Because Hooker suffered the injury before coming to the NFL, he would be placed on the Non Football Injury list, instead of the PUP List. Either way, Hooker won't be able to practice until he's off the list. It's hard to envision Hooker being able to contribute in games until at least the latter portion of the 2023 season.
To the credit of Joey Porter Jr, he had 21 passes broken up (non interceptions) in college. Having said that, the Lions brass values tangible impact plays. Porter only had 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 1 sack in his combined 35 games, 31 starts, with Penn St. If Porter is available with Pick # 34 (he very realistically might not be, especially with the Steelers opening Round 2 with Pick # 32) and the Lions pass on Porter again, the low number of tangible impact plays could easily be the primary reason why.

2023 NFL Draft Day 2 mock draft: Will Levis, Hendon Hooker find homes in Round 2; Steelers, Chiefs take WRs
..........
Joey Porter Jr. with Pick # 34 would be great value for the Lions. With Porter filling a long term need.
My guess is the Lions would take Michael Mayer over Luke Musgrave, the decision with Pick # 48 or any Pick came down to the 2 TEs. While Musgrave probably has more upside potential, Mayer has been much more productive as a receiver and has been much healthier. Mayer only missed 1 game in his 3 seasons with Notre Dame. Musgrave missed the final 11 games of the 2022 season with a knee injury.
Jalin Hyatt with Pick # 55 would be a good value selection for the Lions. With the added benefit of helping compensate for the loss of Jamison Williams for the first 6 games. The main downside with the Hyatt selection is the lack of overall bulk in the Lions WR corp would be even further magnified.

2023 NFL Draft: Rounds 2 and 3 Mock Draft
.............
O'Cyrus Torrence, Adetomiba Adebawore, and Cam Smith selections outcome for the Lions would be a very good Lions 2nd Round draft outcome for the Lions. Keeanu Benton would be my preference over Adetomiba Adebawore, because of the need factor is greater, and both seem like they are in the same draft cluster. But Adebawore makes plenty of sense as well, with versatility being a key reason why.

NFL mock draft 2023: Second-round projections
............
Will Levis with Pick # 34 makes a lot of sense for the Lions, if the team medical reports on him are favorable.
Sam LaPorta doesn't seem to have enough upside potential for the Lions get enough value anywhere in Round 2.
Between the two DE-Edge players, I rather the Lions draft Isaiah Foskey than Darick Hall. Foskey has had noticeably more tangible impact production and probably has more upside potential.
