The Lions draft slots in the 2023 first round are now set
..........
From the standpoint of overall Draft Capital in the 2023 Draft entering the off-season, the Lions rank 3rd in the NFL.
The Matthew Stafford trade worked out well for the LA Rams, as they won the 2021 season Super Bowl. Because of the Rams falling all the way to 5-12, putting the Lions in the Pick # 6 Draft spot, the trade by Brad Holmes from a draft resource standpoint turned out better than anyone could have realistically expected. This is even with the Lions beginning last off-season with pick # 32 in the 2022 Draft. This is a tremendous opportunity for the Lions.

Expect the Lions to be very selective in the draft process
..........
The Best Possible Lions Player should be the approach and I'm glad it is. Drafting players that aren't good fits for the Lions culture especially, would very likely set back the team or worse.
With the Lions draft selections that have been relatively healthy in the first 2 drafts of this regime, the results on the field have been very good. A large part of the Lions Foundation is from the 2021 and 2022 Lions Draft Crops.

4 teams the Detroit Lions could trade with in the 2023 NFL Draft
..........
Note: This article was written before the Jeff Okudah trade to the Falcons:
Lions trade CB Jeff Okudah to Falcons for 5th Round Pick-'23
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1742/lions-trade-okudah-falcons-round
Regarding Pick # 6, if Alabama DE/Edge Will Anderson has been taken already and the Lions aren't comfortable taking Jalen Carter with Pick # 6 because of off the field concerns, trading down to Pick # 10 or # 11 would make plenty of sense if the Lions get a good trade offer.
It's harder to assess what's going to be available with Pick # 18.
Overall, much more often than not, I prefer the Lions to trade down than to trade up.

The PFF Analytics 2023 NFL Mock Draft: Four QBs go off the board first, Will Anderson Jr. lands in Seattle
..........
If the first 5 selections go this way and the Lions don't get a good enough offer to trade down from Pick # 6, I think the most likely selection will be DE Tyree Wilson, with CB Christian Gonzalez a close 2nd. Devon Witherspoon would be 3rd. With Jalen Carter 4th and T Paris Johnson the 5th most likely.
I'm surprised that Texas RB Bijan Robinson didn't get taken in Round 1 of this Mock Draft. Robinson would be my prediction for the Lions with Pick # 18, assuming the pick isn't traded. CB Deonte Banks, Florida G O’Cyrus Torrence (who wasn't included in Round 1 of this Mock Draft) DT Bryan Breese, and WR Quentin Johnston are the next most likely selections by the Lions with Pick # 18. This, based on the first 17 selections in this Mock Draft being off the board, and the Lions ending up with Tyree Wilson.

2023 NFL Mock Draft: C.J Stroud, Anthony Richardson fall below top 10; three defenders go in first five picks
...........
Other than CJ Stroud going to Indianapolis with Pick # 4 instead of Will Levis, this is how I'm currently projecting the first 5 selections to be.
If the Mock Draft scenario by Will Branson happens, I think the most likely outcome if a trade doesn't occur is Lions are going to draft CJ Stroud. He's the only QB who I believe the Lions will end up drafting if he falls to Pick # 6 and the Lions don't trade down.
If the Lions keep Pick # 18, under this Mock Draft Scenario with the first 17 players listed being selected in Brinson's Mock Draft, I think Paris Johnson Jr. will slightly edge out Bijan Robinson as the selection. Jaxon Smith-Njigba would be my 3rd most likely possibility for the Lions. If the Lions take Stroud instead of CB Devon Witherspoon, then Joey Porter Jr. would be my 3rd most likely possibility for the Lions.

Two round final NFL mock draft from Natalie Miller
.......
I believe the Lions would select Deonte Banks over Emmanuel Forbes because Banks has much more bulk.
Trenton Simpson with Pick # 48 in Round 2 would be a good value pick for the Lions. Darnell Washington would be very tempting. Close call, though I slightly would prefer Washington.
I would be surprised if the Lions drafted Tyrique Stevenson with Pick # 55 in Round 2, especially if the Lions draft a CB earlier in the draft.

After todays events, I really don’t see Brad Holmes drafting Jalen Carter. It is clear that Brad Holmes does not mess around with off field issues due to the departures of Cephus and CJ Moore. I had read media reports that he more favorable to Jalen Carter after meeting with him but I think that is all smoke and mirrors. Smart GMs won’t tell the NFL world their cards that they are playing with. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s all smoke and mirrors. There are reports that Atlanta really wants Carter so my prediction is that Brad Holmes could use that as leverage to get draft capital and move back to 8. CB Christian Gonzalez should still be available at 8. With the departures of Cephus and CJ Moore (and Williams being suspended for 6 games) I really think we should draft a WR at 18. I’d love to go after Quentin Johnston from TCU. In mock drafts I’ve seen him as high up as top 10 to early 20s. Josh Reynolds contract will be up after this year and Amon-Ra St Brown will want to get paid so drafting Johnston can help lock down the WR position for addition years and give us salary cap flexibility. Not to mention depth for this season. Just my two cents

Excellent comments, Batchrules. We are definitely on the same wavelength with this.
Even before the Lions gambling story broke, I didn't think the Lions would draft Jalen Carter.
Ideally, the Lions will be able to trade down from Pick # 6 (with the possible exception if Will Anderson is still available, which isn't likely). Atlanta with Pick # 8 would be the ideal trade partner, though the Bears could still attempt to trade up from Pick # 9 to Pick # 7 (Las Vegas) to select Carter. While I prefer the Lions pass on Carter, I don't want him ending up on an NFC North opponent.
Based on how I believe the first 17 picks will go (current projection based on no more trades), Quentin Johnston is my projection to the Lions with Pick # 18. Johnston can help provide the vertical threat dimension while Jamison Williams is suspended and be a long term solution at the X Receiver position. IMHO, Johnston wouldn't be a reach with Pick # 18.

2023 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 1st round wishlist
............
Will Anderson is the player of the 7 featured in this article that I would prefer with Pick # 6.
CJ Stroud probably would be my 2nd choice. The value for Stroud with Pick # 6 probably would be too good to pass up.
Christian Gonzalez is 3rd, with Devon Witherspoon 4th. Witherspoon has the higher floor. Gonzalez has the higher ceiling. With the Lions not expecting again to be picking as high as # 6 or close for many years, I rather the Lions go for the higher ceiling player. Especially, since Gonzalez doesn't have any known character concerns or injury concerns.
Of the 3 players mentioned as possible Lions options with Pick # 18, none jump out as ideal.
Darnell Wright would be my 1st choice of the 3 options mentioned. Unless the Lions believe that Wright has the skill set to be a high caliber long term LT, I hope he's taken before the Lions are scheduled to be on the clock with Pick # 18. I want the Lions to keep Penei Sewell at RT, with the exception of an emergency type of situation. While Wright has a good chance at being a high level RG, he's only played two games at Guard (both at RG) during his time with Tennessee. There are plenty of unknowns with Wright as a RG prospect. Having said this, a major benefit of drafting Wright is he would at the very least provide a huge upgrade as a Backup Tackle, compared to the Lions current situation.
Bryan Bresee would be my 2nd choice, of the 3 players. With the Lions already having viable options for DT in expected passing situations (Aidan Hutchinson, John Cominsky, and Josh Paschal) that are better suited on the edge on early downs, I don't think Bresee would be an efficient enough move. Especially, Hutch, Cominsky, and Paschal all under contract through at least the 2024 season. A DT with more bulk strength is my preference for the Lions at DT.
Nolan Smith would be my 3rd choice, out of the 3 players. Smith is better suited to be a 3-4/odd man front) edge rusher. Smith doesn't seem unique enough, compared to James Houston, for Smith to be a better option with Pick # 18, than the realistic other options with Pick # 18.

FMIA: Peter King’s Mock Draft
............
The Lions would be very fortunate if the top 5 picks go the way Peter King is projecting them. Will Anderson would likely be a slam dunk selection for the Lions, barring an off the charts trade offer.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions drafted Deonte Banks over Joey Porter Jr, though I think the Lions would likely choose Porter over Banks. If the Lions pass on both of them, or either if only one is available, it probably would be because both have very low interception and forced fumble college numbers. If the Lions end up drafting Emmanuel Forbes with Pick # 18 or in a trade down, his ball skill takeaways would be an enormous reason why. I would be very surprised if Porter isn't drafted somewhere in Round 1.
If Quentin Johnston is about to fall out of Round 1, I hope the Lions attempt to trade up for Johnston. This way, the Lions could use the 5th year option on him, if it looks like the best way to proceed. Even without the 5th year option, the Lions should try to trade up for Johnston in early Round 2, if he's still available. This, assuming the Lions don't draft another WR before then.

PFT’s one and only 2023 mock draft
............
There's no way the Lions are taking TWO outside CBs in Round 1.
The chances of Tyree Wilson lasting to Pick # 15 are closer to 0 % than to 1 %.

Kyle Meinke’s final 2023 mock draft: Lions add playmakers at 2 levels of defense
..........
If the Lions draft a CB with the Pick # 6 Draft Resource, I think Myles Murphy will get serious consideration by the Lions, if he's available with Pick # 18. When the dust settles, my gut feeling is the Lions will pass on Murphy. If the Lions don't view Quentin Johnston or one of the other WRs as enough value for Pick # 18 and the Lions don't end up trading down, I think O’Cyrus Torrence and Bryan Bresee (in that order) are the more likely selection. Murphy passes the eye ball test, has good character, and work ethic, the parts seem to be greater than the sum. Murphy's production and impact with Clemson doesn't match his measurables. With DE not being a short term need for the Lions, Murphy doesn't jump out enough for him to be the Lions best option with Pick # 18.
