Clark Phillips III has many similarities as a CB to former Lions CB Dre'Bly, the team's current CB. Including, size, playmaking abilities, gambling style, and preparation.
One benefit in particular regarding drafting Phillips is he would provide versatility at CB, in that he can contribute either on the Outside or the Slot. It wouldn't surprise me if Phillips eventually plays Safety in the NFL, following a pretty similar path that former Lions, current Seahawks S Quandre Diggs did.
The main concern with Phillips is size, combined with Phillips' below average vertical jump for a DB (33") at the Combine. While Phillips usually has very good time when playing the ball, he's had his share of problems against taller WRs.
If the Lions don't draft a CB before Pick # 48 in Round 2, Phillips should get serious consideration with that pick or with Pick # 55, if the Lions don't draft a CB with the Pick # 38 draft resource. There probably will be one or more other options with these picks that I like better. Yet, it's hard to overlook Phillips' 4 pick 6s during his time with Utah and his overall ball production.
