NFL Free Agency Preview: Defensive Backs ( 2023 )

In the latter thread, I expressed the following:
Cameron Sutton is an intriguing CB option, as he would be a viable option to starting on the outside or as a Slot CB.
Great decision by Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell!
In addition to versatility, Cam Sutton has been durable. He's played in 16 regular season games the last 4 seasons and has only missed 3 regular season games in the last 5 seasons.
Cam Sutton is a football player, not a workout warrior. I think he will be a great fit for the Lions.
The chances of Jeff Okudah being traded have increased.
The Lions could still easily draft a CB with Pick # 6 or Pick # 18.

Lions, Cameron Sutton agree to deal
.............
The Lions agreeing to a 3 year contract with Cam Sutton is an indicator that the Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell expect the Lions to compete for the NFC North Title and much more, in the 2023 season, and for many seasons to come. In the first 2 years of this regime, the Lions didn't come close to investing in a FA from another team the way the Lions are investing in Sutton.

I gladly would sign for Cam Sutton to repeat his Steelers 2022 season numbers with the Lions, each of his seasons with the team.

With the Lions pass rush substantially improving as the 2022 season moved along, I'm optimistic that Cam Sutton will continue to provide high caliber pass coverage.

Aaron Glenn, Brian Duker, and Dre'Bly must be thrilled to have the opportunity to coach Cam Sutton and have Sutton help in the development of Lions CBs.

Breaking down the Lions free agency contract details
CB Cameron Sutton The new cornerback comes over from Pittsburgh on a complicated three-year, $33 million contract.
Sutton cashed in a $10.9 million signing bonus. The Lions helped spread that cap hit out by adding two void years at the back end of the contract.
His $1.1 million base salary in 2023 is fully guaranteed, and Sutton also has $9 million in guarantees on a 2024 base salary of $10.5 million. The remaining $1.5 million gets guaranteed on the third day of the 2024 league year, too.
Sutton’s cap hit in 2023 is $2.8 million.
.............
According to the Over the Cap website, Cam Sutton's salary cap number in 2023 is $3,280,000. This is the correct number. This is a very team friendly number for the Lions.

If Cam Sutton performs the way the Lions are anticipating, the $12,680,000 salary cap number for both the 2024 season and 2025 season would be borderline on the high side. A restructuring of the contract is a very realistic possibility in 2024 or 2025. If Sutton doesn't perform as well as the Lions are anticipating, a restructuring downward for 2025 or Sutton being released sometime in 2025 before the start of the regular season, would become a very realistic possibility.
