Projecting the Detroit Lions depth chart for Week 1
.......
TE Brock Wright very realistically could be a Practice Squad call-up for the game. Wright has been in the Lions system for months, which makes him a logical choice as a call-up in the Lions regular season opener. So much depends on game day roster flexibility, based on injuries.
I think Quintez Cephus is more likely going be ahead of KhaDarel Hodge in the WR pecking order vs. the 49ers. Cephus has been in the Lions new system much longer.

Lions prepping to face both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance in Week 1
.........
From a Defensive preparation standpoint, this game will probably be the most difficult for the Lions all season. The addition of Trey Lance off the bench and this being the first game of the season ( new wrinkles that Kyle Shanahan and Co. didn't show on tape in the pre-season ) provide an enormous challenge to an already difficult Offense to defend. On top of this, the Lions are using a new Defensive system and that there's plenty of youth on the Lions Defense. The Lions Secondary is especially young.

Detroit Lions are 7.5-point underdogs for season-opening game against San Francisco 49ers .........
The 49ers won only one more game than the Lions did in the 2020 season. Yet, the outlook / perception of the two teams heading into the 2021 regular season is the 49ers are at least a playoff caliber team and the Lions are a bottom 5 NFL team. Granted, the 49ers injury situation was amongst the worst in the NFL last season. The Lions injury situation though wasn't much better.
The Lions heavy focus on youth in the first season of the Brad Holmes-Dan Campbell regime, coupled with the Lions trying to adapt to new systems with all 3 units, contributes greatly to why the 49ers are heavily favorite in Detroit, in the 2021 season opener.

Breaking down the Detroit Lions Week 1 depth chart .......
Until / unless Kalif Raymond demonstrates that he's a # 2 caliber WR based on merit, I'm more than comfortable with Raymond being the Lions Primary Kickoff and Punt Returner ( if it turns out that he is. )

This first game could well be the most important of the season, a win when everybody expects you to fail can give a huge boost kick, let's not underestimate the psychological impact of this game that could set the tone for the remainder of the season !

Potentially, a Lions upset win over the 49ers could have the opposite affect of the 1st game of the Matt Patricia Era, back in the 2018 season. A putrid performance at home on MNF, in a lopsided loss to the Jets, set the tone for the rest of the time Patricia remained the Lions HC.

PFT’s Week One 2021 picks
[49ers (-7.5) at Lions
MDS’s take: The Lions won’t be quite as bad as everyone thinks, but the 49ers will be good enough to beat them in a closer game than people are expecting.
MDS’s pick: 49ers 16, Lions 13.
Florio’s take: Copy and paste the Vikings-Bengals take here. Replace 49ers for Vikings.
Florio’s pick: 49ers 31, Lions 17.
.......
Taylor Decker's finger injury, which kept him out of practice today, has at least for the time being the # 1 question mark regarding this game.

David, I know this is not the most appropriate place but I'd like to have your thoughts about the latest big events / outings, among others the fantastic opener Cowboys @ Buccs, the huge contract of TJ Watt, the outing of Tom Brady about the new numbering rules for jerseys ?
BTW, Lions jerseys were again atrocious to recognize numbers with these silver number ... 0, 5, 8 and 9 were barely discernable during these preseason games

Frenchy, I gladly will try to provide thoughts on all of the topics you mentioned.
The Lions blue jersey numbers are indeed an ongoing problem. The good news under the circumstance is there are only 48 players active for regular season games and there are more players with a single digit number this season.

Behind Enemy Lines: Talking Lions, who are not good, with Lions Wire
......
The Jaguars upset the Colts in the season opener for both teams, last season. The Dolphins beat the Jaguars on the road, in Week # 3. That game turned around the Dolphins season and it was a reality check for the Jaguars, on the way to an eventual 15 game losing streak to close out the season.
I'm not sure if Jeff Risdon is sticking with his Lions upset over the 49ers prediction, now that Taylor Decker is officially out ( and on IR )?

In 49ers, a stiff challenge awaits new-look Lions in season opener
......
With DT Javon Kinlaw out and DT Maurice Hurst on IR, it wouldn't surprise me if Arik Armstead is regularly lined up at DT in expected passing situations.
Without Kinlaw, the 49ers run Defense takes a hit. They also lose the push he can provide as a pass rusher.
One familiar player on the 49ers to all of those in the Lions organization with LA Rams connection is 49ers DE Samson Ebukam. He signed with the 49ers as an UFA this past March. When / if Armstead is used at DT in expected passing situations, Ebukam, will probably see some action at DE. With Nick Bosa and Dee Ford the 49ers primary DEs in expected passing situations. How much Ford has remaining in the tank is a key question mark for this game and the overall 49ers overall season?

Detroit News scouting report: 49ers at Lion
.......
The greatest issue with Jimmy Garoppolo with the 49ers since the 2018 season is other than the 2019 season, in which he helped lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl, he hasn't been able to stay relatively healthy He only started 6 games for SF last season. Yet, that's double his starts compared to the 2018 season.
