Report: Matthew Stafford asks for trade, Lions plan to accommodate him

Matthew Stafford quotes/ info: 2020 season
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/684/matthew-stafford-quotes-info-season
I respect Matthew Stafford's decision in wanting to be traded.. Stafford gave the Lions his best, playing with injuries that would have sidelined the vast majority of NFL players. Stafford was by far the best Lions QB in the 51 seasons I have been a Lions fan. Stafford's unique skills were a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, the Lions didn't win enough over the last 12 seasons, with the last few seasons taking a toll on Stafford and the Lions.
If trade offers are close, the Lions should trade Stafford to an AFC team. Indianapolis and Pittsburgh immediately come to mind as AFC teams that need QB upgrades. Philip Rivers is retiring after 17 seasons. Ben Roethlisberger, who like Rivers was a 1st Round Pick in 2004, looks like he's a shell of the QB who will almost certainly be in the HOF one day. The Texans are an x-factor because of the ongoing Deshaun Watson situation.
The salary cap ramifications of trading Stafford are concerning. Mike Eisner and Brad Holmes have their work cut out for them regarding maximizing the Lions Salary Cap situation with Stafford and well beyond him.

Bye Stafford! I am so elated!!!!!! His antics last year proved that he did not want to be in Detroit! Good riddance!!! The press conference with Dan Campbell was different than any other coach! I’ve never seen a more passionate coach in Detroit!!! If Stafford was not pumped about this then it’s very clear that he needs to go. I’m not surprised about this but I’m also very elated that it became true. I think this will be only the beginning, that Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes are sending a message: if you want to win here, we’d love to have you......if you want to just collect a paycheck, find another team. This just proved him kneeling for the anthem was proof that he didn’t care if he won in Detroit. Bye Bye Matt!

Detroit Lions actively seek to trade QB Matthew Stafford, sources say
..........
Kenny Anderson won playoff games in the 1981 season, his 11th season. The Bengals reached the Super Bowl that season. The 49ers beat the Bengals in Super Bowl 16, which was played at the Pontiac Silverdome, the Lions former home.
The Pick # 7 draft resource the Lions have is more likely than not going to result in the Lions drafting the QB the Lions hope is the long term solution at the position.

Batchrules, thanks as always for your thoughts.
As much as I respected what Matthew Stafford brought to the table in many different ways, he made a horrible decision kneeling for the National Anthem. It's something that was unsettling on this end over the course of the entire season. Though I wish Stafford and his family great health, because of the National Anthem kneeling and financial support of so called 'Social Justice', I am not sure what my reaction will be when he's playing for another team.
Under the circumstance of Stafford wanting to be traded, it's best that the Lions decided to trade him. I agree with you regarding Dan Campbell's Press Conference and the passion he displayed. Campbell is authentic!

Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford are headed for a divorce and fans are literally in pain
........
The Colts have most of the pieces in place, plus a very favorably salary cap situation. In addition to QB, the only major need for them is at LT. Right now, I would make the Colts the favorite to land Stafford in a trade with the Lions. With the Patriots the 2nd most likely team to land Stafford
If the Lions trade Stafford to an NFC team, Carolina and WFT are the two that are most likely to me.

What Matthew Stafford can reasonably bring Lions in terms of value, likely trade partners
.........
I'm cautiously optimistic that the Lions will get a better trade offer for Matthew Stafford than the ones mentioned in this article.
If the trade offer scenarios in this article are the best offers the Lions will receive for Stafford, the deal with the Patriots ( 1st Round ( pick # 15 ) in 2021 and the Patriots 4th Round pick in 2021 is the one I hope the Lions accept.

Trading Stafford makes plenty of sense, they need to rebuild, accumulate draft picks and free some salary cap to be aggressive on the free agent market.
As you say, Colts and Patriots are possible landing spots for Stafford, not sure Matt Patricia heading back to New England would be a major factor though. The Steelers otoh are tied with Roethlisberger's contract.

According to the following site, the Steelers would gain $19 million if they removed Ben Roethlisberger from the roster.
overthecap.com/calculator/pittsburgh-steelers/
Assuming this information is correct, the Steelers would still be more than $ 15 million over the cap, not even counting the addition of Matthew Stafford's contract ( or even if they restructured the contract ). The Steelers would still have to free up a lot of cap space. For sure, it would be much easier for the Colts or Patriots to trade for Stafford.
There's been plenty of speculation that the Broncos could try to upgrade their QB situation from Drew Lock. New GM George Paton was with the Vikings organization when John Elway drafted Lock. If Stafford was traded to Denver, he would be reunited with G-C Graham Glasgow.

You're right concerning the Steelers, the reasoning behind keeping Roethlisberger is well explained in this article :
www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2021/1/21/22241073/6-steelers-whose-dead-money-outweighs-their-cap-savings-if-released-in-2021-roethlisberger-haden
Ben Roethlisberger Dead money: $22,250,000 Cap Savings: $19,000,000
The problem when it comes to Ben Roethlisberger is both of these numbers are extremely high. With the majority of Roethlisberger‘s 2021 salary cap hit being in the form of dead money, it makes it difficult for the Steelers to pay so much for someone who would no longer be on the team. But on the other hand, do the Steelers really wants to pay an additional $19 million to a quarterback who turns 39 before the start of next season? It’s extremely difficult for the Steelers to keep Roethlisberger at this number, but the only way to reduce it and keep him on the team is to knock off some of that $19 million in the form of an extension. But it’s still the same problem: Do the Steelers want to invest more years in a quarterback who only has one season left before turning 40?

Thanks for the sharing the Ben Roethlisberger / Steelers related article.
If I was in the Steelers position, I wouldn't extend the salary cap debt with Roethlisberger beyond the 2021 salary cap. The chances of the Steelers being a serious Super Bowl contender in the 2021 season appear to be low at this time. So much would have to break right for them. They should try to position themselves for the 2022 season and beyond. For a franchise that has been very successful and is used to going into each season with Super Bowl aspirations, taking steps back to move forward is easier said than done.
