This is shocking news! I'm going to wait until more information is available before offering an opinion whether I agree with the decision by the Lions organization to fire Brayden Coombs before a new GM and HC are in place.

Right now, what comes to mind is the Coordinator who got the best results with the Lions was fired today. With Jamal Agnew and Jayron Kearse, two of the Lions 2021 UFAs I hope are back with the team next season, far less than thrilled with the Lions decision to fire Coombs.

What makes today's decision that much more shocking is this happened 5 days after the Lions hired Chris Spielman as an advisor to Sheila Ford Hamp and Rod Wood. Brayden Coombs is the son of Ohio St. Defensive Coordinator / DB Coach Kerry Coombs. Not many people are more closely connected to Ohio State University than Chris Spielman! A question that immediately comes to mind is as follows:

Was the Lions decision to fire Brayden Coombs something that Chris Spielman approved of?

The fake Punt decision and specific call itself is one I believe was a good strategy decision, despite it not working. Having said that, I don't think a Special Teams Coordinator should make a fake call unless he has approval from the Head Coach.

Firing Brayden Coombs is a messy decision. It was also the right decision.

Even with what was mentioned in the article, I'm far from certain Brayden Coombs should have been fired. A suspension might have been the better course of action, with the new GM and HC determining how to proceed with Coombs. Chances are, most GM and HC viable candidates would have wanted to move on him.

It seems like Brayden Coombs wanted to be fired by the Lions. Hence, have the flexibility to seek other coaching opportunties for the 2021 season.

I totally respect Darrell Bevell wanting Coombs removed from the Lions Coaching Staff. Yet, the Lions organization suspending Coombs for the rest of the season might have been the better decision by the Front Office.

Brayden Coombs might have cost himself a future NFL HC opportunity. His actions yesterday and in recent weeks were not team oriented.

Though I still like the fake punt decision from a strategy standpoint, the rational of Matthew Stafford coming off two straight plays that he was drilled helps justify the intended decision by Darrell Bevell to punt in that 4th and 4 situation.

My guess is Brayden Coombs is going to get another NFL Special Teams Coordinator job in 2021. However, there are some HCs that won't hire Coombs because of his insubordination to Darrell Bevell.

It seems obvious that there is more behind-the-scenes stuff than a mere rogue call.
Coombs was a good ST coordinator, ok, but now that the decision has been made, it's a closed case.
The Lions brass shouldn't let this story develop into a long-lasting mediocre telenovela.

1. I agree with what you expressed.

2. The Lions have been much more often than not the last 63 seasons a long-lasting mediocre telenovela.
