Lions place Austin Bryant on PUP
Many of the Lions’ moves previously were reported, but the team made it all official Saturday afternoon.
They released offensive guard Oday Aboushi, offensive guard Beau Benzchawel, quarterback David Blough, receiver Victor Bolden, defensive end Will Clarke, safety Jalen Elliott, defensive tackle Frank Herron, running back Wes Hills, defensive tackle Albert Huggins, running back Jason Huntley, receiver Tom Kennedy, receiver Chris Lacy, tight end Isaac Nauta, linebacker Anthony Pittman, safety Bobby Price, defensive tackle Olive Sagapolu, punter Arryn Siposs, tight end Matt Sokol, defensive tackle Kevin Strong, cornerback Dee Virgin, offensive guard Kenny Wiggins, defensive tackle Kevin Wilkins, running back Jonathan Williams and long snapper Steve Wirtel.
They waived/injured offensive tackle Dan Skipper.
The Lions also placed defensive end Austin Bryant on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. He will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.
Bryant, a 2019 fourth-round pick, was limited to only four games with a pectoral injury as a rookie.
Safety Jayron Kearse was moved to the reserve/suspended list.

Lions 2020 Training Camp Preview
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/698/lions-2020-training-camp-preview?page=2
The COVID-19 situation led to no pre-season games, joint practices, and much more flexible Practice Squad procedures for the 2020 season. Hence, that made it much more difficult to predict the cutdown to 53 players for the Lions, compared to previous seasons. I'm not surprised at the higher number of surprises this year with the Lions roster decisions to get down to 53.
I'm planning on threads for the cuts from Saturday that I'm not comfortable with.
For now, in this message, some quick thoughts on the cuts the Lions announced on Saturday in alphabetical order:
1. Oday Aboushi. His lack of position flexibility beyond Guard was why I thought he more likely than not would be cut. As a vested veteran, Aboushi isn't subject to waivers. If he doesn't get a contract offer he likes from another team, the Lions P.S. is a realistic possibility.
2. Beau Benzchawel. I thought he had very slightly less than a 50-50 chance at surviving the cut. Definitely a priority for the Lions P. S. if he clears waivers. I think it's around 50-50 he clears waivers. I understand the decision to place him on waivers but the drafting of Guards in Rounds 3 and 4 in 2020 gave the Lions flexibility.
3. David Blough. Very risky decision by Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia. How the Lions can keep CB Mike Ford on the 53 man roster over Blough is beyond me. Priority P.S. player if Blough clears waivers. I think there's a little less than 50 % chance Blough is claimed by another team. Yet. it feels like the Lions are playing Russian Roulette at the most important position.
4. WR Victor Bolden. Expected cut. Uphill battle for P.S. shot in the coming days.
5. DE Will Clarke. Expected cut. Possible P.S. option or injury replacement signing by the Lions later in the season.
6. S Jalen Elliott. Very likely clears waivers. P.S. Candidate if he clears waivers.
7. DT Frank Herron. Likely clears waivers. Heavily in the mix for the P.S. if unclaimed.
8. RB Wes Hills. Very likely clears waivers. Probably won't be signed to Lions P.S. at least in the coming week.
9. DT Albert Huggins. Uphill battle to even get a P.S. opportunity in the coming weeks.
10. Jason Huntley. A near shocking cut. I strongly disagree with the decision. Has the best chance of being claimed off waivers of the Lions cuts to get to 53. I think it's at least 55% he's claimed. High priority P.S. signing if he clears waivers. Lions easily could have competition.
11. Tom Kennedy. Very likely clears waivers. Probably around 50-50 for P.S. shot this week.
12. Chris Lacy. Very likely clears waivers. Less than 50-50 for another P.S. shot in tbe coming days.
13. Isaac Nauta. I thought he had a slightly better than even chance at surviving cut to 53. Probably will clear waivers. Another P.S. option in the coming days likely if he clears waivers.
14. Anthony Pittman. Very likely clears waivers. Pretty good chance at P.S. opportunity in the coming days.
15. S Bobby Price. Uphill battle to get even a P.S. opportunity in the coning days.
16. Olive Sagapolu. Same as with Bobby Price.
17. Arryn Siposs. Probably won't be claimed off waivers. Solid P.S. candidate.
18. Matt Sokol. Same as with Arryn Siposs.
19. Kevin Strong. I thought he had a slightly better chance of surviving cutdown to 53. I disagree with the decision, though not to the extent as with Blough and Huntley being released. Probably 50 % chance or very slightly less of being claimed off waivers. Good chance at P.S. opportunity if he clears waivers. High upside potential player.
20. Dee Virgin. I thought he had a slightly better than even chance at surviving the cutdown to 53. Probably has at most a 40 % chance of being claimed off waivers. High priority P.S. signing if he clears waivers, because of his Special Teams abilities.
21. Kenny Wiggins. I'm surprised the Lions released him because of his versatility. Ability might have diminished significantly because of injury. Not subject to waivers as a Vested Veteran. Lions probably will try to sign him to P.S. if it was more of a numbers game situation that led to his release.
22. Kenny Wilkins. Very likely is unclaimed off waivers. Uphill battle to get P.S. opportunity in the coming days.
23. Jonathan Williams. Has probably between a 40 to 45 % chance of being claimed off waivers. If he clears waivers, probably would be Lions # 2 choice for a P.S. spot for a RB, with Huntley the # 1 choice.
24.Steve Wirtel. I think he has slightly better than a 50% chance of being claimed off waivers. I'm not surprised that Don Muhlbach retained the Lions LS job. Stability at that position in a season of COVID-19 being a major factor outweighs potential. Especially, with the Lions having a different Punter. If Unclaimed, I think the Lions will try to sign Wirtel to the P.S..
