Headbutts and blackouts: Matt Prater celebrates another game-winner for Detroit

Lions 26, Cardinals 23: Game # 3 ( 2020 )
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/779/lions-26-cardinals-game-2020
The delay of game penalty turned what would have been a 57 yard FG attempt into a 62 yard FG situation, if attempted.
I assumed the delay of game penalty was intentional in order to try to draw the Cardinals offside. It was a 4th and 6 situation that an offside penalty would have made the situation 4tn and 1. Now, I'm not sure if the penalty was intentional.
The bottom line is I'm glad the Lions didn't attempt a 57 yard FG that situation, let alone a 62 yd FG. I would have been comfortable if the Lions went for it on 4tn and 6, if the play call made sense. Yet, after seeing Jack Fox deliver yet again, the punt worked out extremely well. The Lions Defense finally came through in the 4th QTR, with forced punts on both Cardinals possessions ( including a 3 and out when the Cardinals were pinned pretty close to their goal line. Jamal Agnew's punt set up the tying FG, after the 3rd Down sack by Hassan Reddick in the red zone. The Lions final drive, minus the then critical holding penalty by Big V, which wiped out Marvin Hall's catch ( it would have been 1st and Goal at the 1 ), was the best clutch football the Lions played since at least last September.
Matt Prater has one of, if not the best track record ever in NFL history, of making FG's in the final 2 minutes of regulation time or beyond. Thankfully, he came through again, along with the overall FG unit. I basically forgot what it felt like the Lions winning a game. Until I knew there was no penalty flag on the successful 39 yard Prater FG in the final seconds of regulation time, I didn't exhale. That much more after the Holding penalty by Big V. I didn't notice that penalty flag on the TV angle shown of that play.

Another unsung hero is the punter Jack Fox, his hang time is ridiculous !

Jack Fox is having a Pro Bowl caliber season. In essence, Fox is a consistent version of Sam Martin.

With free agency looming, Detroit Lions' Matt Prater's struggles are not lessening

Lions 34, Bears 30: Game # 12 ( 2020 )

At this time, my preference is I hope the Lions and Matt Prater can work out a new contract that both parties are satisfied with.
The clutch kicking of Matt Prater in 2020, combined with leg strength not diminishing in a significant manner yet, is a combination that I rather have than an unknown kicker on the NFL level.
The first 5 combined games of the 2014 season are exhibit A of the pitfalls of depending on inexperienced NFL kickers or discarded kickers ( for football reasons ). Failed kicking in the game # 5 loss to Buffalo ended up costing the Lions the NFC North Title.

Not easy to find a reliable kicker, Matt Prater still has a couple of years left at the highest level. I've seen a lot of kickers having accuracy problems this year, even among the best ones.

An example of what you mention is the struggles Cowboys Kicker Greg Zuerlien had Tuesday night in Baltimore. He missed 3 FGs the other night, though 2 were over 50 yards long. He didn't miss a FG in the previous Cowboys games but he missed 3 PATs earlier this season.
In the 2018 season NFC Championship Game in New Orleans, Zuerlien made a 48 yard FG in the last few seconds of regulation time for the LA Rams. Hence, the game went to OT. In OT, Zuerlein made a 57 yard FG that sent the Rams to the Super Bowl. Zuerlein was amongst the best Kickers in the NFL for many seasons. For the St. Louis Rams, he had at least two FGs of 60 yards or longer.

Right, and in that same game Cowboys @ Ravens, even Justin Tucker missed one !

It was mentioned on the FOX telecast of the Ravens game against the Cowboys that the missed FG by Justin Tucker during the game broke a streak of 70 straight under 40 yard FGs made by him.
Justin Tucker is arguably the best Kicker of all-time. The 61 yard FG he made in Detroit in a December, 2013 MNF game in the last minute of the game, was his 6th FG of that evening. The Lions held the Ravens to 0 TDs but still lost that game. I strongly believe the Lions would have won the NFC North Title that season, if not for Tucker's tremendous performance that evening.
