Other than LSU TE Stephen Sullivan, none of the other players that went from picks # 236 to # 255 ( end of the draft ) were options I hoped the Lions would consider. There were many players that have to go the UDRFA route to play in the NFL this season that I preferred over Jashon Cornell with pick # 235.
Jashon Cornell has versatility to play a number of positions on the Lions Defensive Line. Having said that, I'm not optimistic at this time that he has enough ability to be an option at any position on the Defensive Line that would provide winning level play over the course of a season. Even his arm length ( a little over 32" ) is below average for an interior Defensive Lineman and it's far below average for a DE. The arm length issue is certainly concerning if Cornell is used as a 5 Technique DE.
This more likely than not will be a situation in which versatility, effort, and intangibles won't be enough. Even if Cornell makes the Lions 53 man roster or is promoted to the roster after being on the Practice Squad, I have doubts he will be able remain on the roster for even remotely close to the length of his rookie contract ( 4 years ). The exception is if Cornell becomes a major asset on Special Teams.

Lions lose rookie Jashon Cornell to “serious” Achilles injury
..........
Matt Patricia rarely provides this much detail about an injury. This is an indicator that Jashon Cornell is likely out for the season. At best, out for several months. I would be shocked if Cornell plays a down of football for the Lions in a game this season.
