Based on the Lions need at DT and the available players at pick # 197, I'm comfortable with the Lions selection of John Penisini. I'm very surprised that Michigan St. DT Raequan Williams, who I thought was a viable option for the Lions as early as Round 4, ended up not being drafted. The Lions took DTs in both the 6th and 7th Round, passing up Williams. He ended up agreeing to a contract as an UDRFA with the Eagles. Based on the Lions and every team not drafting Williams in 255 combined selections, I'll take him out of the equation at least for now.
There were no other DT remaining options at # 197 that caught my attention as DTs I would have preferred over Penisini.
As for players at other positions that were taken from picks # 198 until pick # 234, in Round 7, before the Lions picked again:
Auburn T Prince Tega Wanogho, Ohio St. WR K.J. Hill, NC State DE-OLB James-Smith Williams, and Stanford OLB-DE Casey Toohill were players I hoped the Lions would consider. Because new Lions Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach Morris Henry was in that role with Auburn the previous 4 years, his input on Auburn players almost certainly was a major part of the Lions draft decision making process. Though one or more of the other 3 players I listed were tempting, none to the point that I'm uncomfortable with the Lions taking Penisini with pick # 197.
The value of John Penisini as an NFL prospect is mainly because of his run Defense abilities, overall strength, long arms ( around 33" ) for his height, effort/ hustle, and leadership. He also can provide some bull rush push as a pass rusher. Penisini is build low to the ground and plays that way. This is a major plus.
On the other hand, Penisini probably won't offer much as a pass rusher except some bull rush effectiveness and consistent effort. If Penisini is on the Lions 53 man roster, barring the injury factor, I'm expecting most of his action to be on early downs/ expected run downs. He's the type of player who often doesn't show up on the stat sheet but he helps enable others to make plays.
Because the Lions needed more viable competition for roster spots at DT, including players that are good run Defender prospects, Penisini fills a need. Though many, if not most projected Penisini to go in the 7th Round or be a priority UDRFA, the middle portion of the 6th Round seems at or close to the area that's reflective of his overall package as an NFL prospect. At the very least, a solid pick by the Lions.
