Lions Free Agency Preview and Results: ( 2020 )

I think Geronimo Allison is a good addition for the Lions. Though Allison isn't a model of consistency, he has plenty of natural ability, he's experienced, and he only turned 26 in January. I'm pleasantly surprised that the Lions were able to land Allison with an NFL Veteran Minimum contract. If Allison demonstrates the work ethic that Matt Patricia and co. expect, which is far from a given, he could end up as one of the best Lions value additions in any of Bob Quinn's seasons as Lions GMs.
More likely than not, Allison will be the Lions # 4 WR in 2020 unless someone the Lions draft progresses quicker than what expectations likely will be. Especially, since a limited at most off-season, from a team activities standpoint, because of the Coronavirus situation.
Because Allison doesn't appear to be a viable option as a slot receiver and he's not a Special Teams asset, he's probably going to need to demonstrate he's the Lions best option as the # 4 WR in order to land a roster spot.

Lions agree to deal with ex-Packers WR Geronimo Allison
………………..
If Jermaine Kearse would have remained relatively healthy for the Lions, I think he would have been a more reliable backup than Geronimo Allison. However, Allison has more upside than Kearse did in 2019. The Lions have seen first hand what Allison is capable of when he's relatively healthy, focused, and when Aaron Rodgers was on the field.

Former Packers receiver Geronimo Allison will try to get career back on track with Lions
……………
Though the Lions probably will give Geronimo Allison practice reps in the slot, in order for him to provide more versatility in games, I'm anticipating that the plan if for Allison to get most of his work at the outside WR positions.
Jared Veldheer, who played his college ball at Hillsdale College, is someone I hope the Lions are considering regarding additional Offensive Tackle depth.

Granted, Geronimo Allison is not coming off a good season. Yet, when he was relatively healthy early in the 2018 season and playing in Mike McCarthy's Offense, one of the Packers Beat Writers tweeted the following. This illustrates why the Lions decision to sign Geronimo Allison is a good one at a minimal price:

Both are NFL Veteran Minimum contracts the Lions easily could move on from.
Geronimo Allison was clearly valued more by the Lions than Geremy Davis at the time the respective contract were agreed to.
Allison's ticket to a roster spot is as WR. Davis' ticket to a roster spot is primarily on Special Teams. It's possible both make the Lions 53 man opening day roster, one of them makes it, or neither make it. The draft certainly could have a huge impact on their respective chances of making the opening day 53 man roster.
