Detroit Lions have options in loaded defensive tackle free-agent class
……………..
I'm anticipating the Lions to be aggressive in Free Agency regarding signing an interior Defensive Lineman. With an edge player also a realistic possibility, based on what the Lions anticipate in the 2020 Draft.
There's no question the Lions need help both at DT and at DE. With DT / interior D-Line the position unit ( along with Guard ) the position unit that needs the most help.
D.J. Reader Jarran Reed are DTs that I think would be worth signing ( the Lions probably don't have the luxury to sign both ) if the asking price makes sense. Reed has more question marks but I think he's going to get a better contract than A'Shawn Robinson, his former Alabama teammate. Reed was taken soon after Robinson in Round 2 of the 2016 Draft.

Vikings release defensive tackle Linval Joseph
…………………..
This was probably a difficult decision for the Vikings ( unlike with Xavier Rhodes ). Linval Joseph has been one of their top Defensive player for most of his 6 seasons with the Vikings. This after him being an asset for the Giants in his first 4 seasons in the NFL ( former 2nd Round Pick ). Joseph turned out to be one of the better high priced UFA signings in the NFL in the last 6 years. In addition to Joseph being one of the best run Defenders in the NFL for most of his time with the Vikings, he provided a power pass rush.
It looked to me that Linval Joseph wasn't at his usual high level as a DT in the 2019 season. I think the Lions should give Joseph serious consideration, at a noticeably more team friendly contract rate. It wouldn't surprise me if Joseph re-signs with the Vikings. I don't expect Rhodes to be back with them.

Chargers release Thomas Davis, Brandon Mebane
……………..
Brandon Mebane turned 35 this past January. He probably will draw some interest, though at team friendly contract terms. Mebane has never provided much as a pass rusher. But he's been one of the better run Defender interior Defensive Lineman in the NFL most of his NFL career. Which began with Seattle back in 2007. It wouldn't surprise me if the Lions have at least some interest in Mebane. Much like Linval Joseph, Brandon Mebane has very good intangibles. Highly respected leaders. Joseph likely will get a much better contract than Mebane will, even factoring in a major pay decrease likely coming for the now former Vikings DT.
Thomas Davis beat the odds with injuries over the years of his high caliber NFL playing career. Realistically, he's at or near the end of a career ( all but one season with Carolina ) that began in 2005. Davis turns 37 later his month. Davis is one of the most respected players in the entire NFL.

Market beefs up for DL-needy Detroit Lions after Dontari Poe’s team option declined
……………
The age/ wear and tear factors are my concerns regarding Dontari Poe. Along with the fact that it will be difficult for Poe to take a physical with the Lions in the near future. If the Lions sign Poe, the amount of guaranteed money beyond 2020 needs to be relatively low. With a signing bonus on the low side as well, in order for the amount of dead salary cap space, if necessary, isn't much.

49ers hold onto Arik Armstead with five-year deal
...……………
After the investment the Lions made with Trey Flowers last March, it was highly unlikely the Lions would be willing to give Arik Armstead the type of money the 49ers gave him to remain with them.

Eagles agree to deal with Javon Hargrave
……………..
This looks like a good deal for both parties. With the Eagles, Javon Hargrave will likely be turned loose upfield more than he was with the Steelers. Which could easily fit Hargrave's skills that much better. I didn't envision Hargrave being on the Lions radar screen, based on opportunity cost and skill set. That's taking nothing away from what Hargrave accomplished with the Steelers and even better performance days probably ahead for him with the Eagles.

Linval Joseph agrees to deal with Chargers
………………
This closes the door for Linval Joseph to re-sign with the Vikings this year.
It's hard to tell if the Vikings took a calculated risk in releasing Linval Joseph, thinking that he wouldn't receive a contract close to as good as the one the LA Chargers are giving him. One thing for sure, this is a good contract for a player over 31, who was recently released. It speaks volumes to the overall package, including intangibles, that Linval Joseph brings to the table.

Falcons land Dante Fowler
…………………
This is a decision I think the Falcons will regret. Dante Fowler no longer has the benefit of playing with Aaron Donald. Fowler is a good athlete but not an elite athlete. He also had significant character issues in the past, though that didn't seem to be the case after he was traded from Jacksonville to the LA Rams during the 2018 regular season.

Cowboys agree to terms with Dontari Poe
……………….
With Dontari Poe coming off a torn quad, the inability for team doctors to give him a physical, Poe turning 30 this coming August, and Poe having high body weight, I'm more than comfortable with the Lions going in another direction. Danny Shelton makes more sense for the Lions, including his experience playing for the Patriots.

Ndamukong Suh likely to stay in Tampa Bay
……………….
If Ndamukong Suh would have been retained by the Dolphins, the 2020 season would have been the 6th and final season of the contract he signed with them as an UFA from the Lions in 2015.
There's no way I can envision Suh as a player that Matt Patricia would want. Suh does things his way, not the Patriot Way.
