Detroit Lions hire ex-Eagles DBs coach Cory Undlin as defensive coordinator
…………….
This thread is a continuation of the following thread:
Lions DC Paul Pasqualoni & OL Coach Jeff Davidson step away

……………..
Cory Undlin has a good reputation from his work as Eagles Defensive Backs Coach. Injuries hit the Eagles hard at CB in the last 2 seasons. The Eagles won the Super Bowl in the season ( 2017) before that. The play of their Secondary was a major reason for that.
I'm hoping that Matt Patricia uses much more of the Jim Schwartz up the field / 'Wide 9' pass rush strategy than the Lions have used in Patricia's 2 seasons as Lions Head Coach. A much more aggressive pass rush strategy is needed regardless. Russell Wilson probably would have completed a 2nd half comeback against the Packers at Lambeau Field yesterday if not for the Packers Pass Rush being the difference in getting the Seahawks off the field when trailing by 5 points in the last few minutes of the game. Granted, it took great execution by Aaron Rodgers and co. after that ( next and final drive of the game ) to secure the win for the Packers. But their pass rush ( especially the 'Smith Brothers' and NT Kenny Clark was a huge part of building and preserving the lead ( which was once 18 points. ).

We could replay the game in the newspapers a hundred times but at the end, it amounts to QB pressure either in zone or man. The Lions were not able to put enough pressure with their 4-man rush and Cory Undlin didn't want to send blitzes by fear of getting thin in coverage, it's his choice. On the other hand, watching the MNF Vikings - Bears, Zimmer was blitzing to death and playing cover 0 nearly every third and long ... different coaches, different mindsets.

Once the WFT cut the Lions lead to 27-13 and got the ball back following a 3 and out, I would have preferred Mike Zimmer's approach. He had confidence that Nick Foles and co. wouldn't make the Vikings pay even with the Vikings being shorthanded at CB due to multiple injuries.

Sure, Tavai as an edge rusher was just pathetic, offensive tackles had an easy time driving him off ... BUT he kept fighting, that's a positive point. The Lions are really missing Julian Okwara in the edge rotation.

Lions CB Darryl Roberts, DE Julian Okwara return to practice
........
Some good Lions news. Julian Okwara returned to practice yesterday. How close he is to being activated is one of many Lions question marks. Being that Julian Okwara was noticeably improving as a pass rusher prior to the leg injury he suffered in Jacksonville back on Oct. 18, I'm hoping he can build on that in the remainder of this season.
