Detroit Lions 2019 NFL Draft prospect: Florida State EDGE Brian Burns
………………………………..
Even with all of the positives Brian Burns brings to the table, the key question on this end is does Burns have enough upside potential as a run Defender to warrant being selected by the Lions with pick # 8? I have some doubts. If the Lions trade down a few spots, Burns could be top option or very close to that for the Lions.

Detroit Lions NFL Draft prospect: Mississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat
……………………..
Montez Sweat is far from a finished product. Yet, he has proven to be an impact player in the SEC. Sky is the limit if Sweat is focused and committed.
From an ability / potential standpoint, Sweat warrants being taken by the Lions with pick # 8. The key question for me is whether Sweat has the football character that Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia are seeking???

Detroit Lions 2019 NFL Draft prospect: Houston DT Ed Oliver
……………………………..
Even taking whether Ed Oliver has good intangibles out of the equation, I have major concerns about the Lions using pick # 8 on a player who doesn't appear to be a good scheme fit. Projecting an Interior Defensive Lineman to be a LB for a large portion of his snaps seems too risky with pick # 8.

Look for Raiders to focus on defensive side of ball at No. 4
………….
I strongly agree that the Raiders will draft a Defensive player if they remain in the # 4 spot.
In addition to the players mentioned, Josh Allen, Montez Sweat, and Brian Burns all seem like realistic possibilities. Though Round 5 ( where they drafted DT Maurice Hurst last year ) has vastly different parameters than Round 1, the heart situation with Montez Sweat is considered much less risky. Hence, when matching need, production, and potential, Sweat fits the Raiders with pick # 4 very well. That much more if Nick Bosa and Josh Allen are taken in the top 3.
Devin White and to a lesser a extent his LSU teammate Greedy Williams also could be in play for the Raiders with pick # 4.

2019 NFL draft preview: Lions eye another piece for rebuilt defensive line
………………………………………….
I would be surprised if Isaiah Buggs is an edge player regularly in the NFL. Buggs weighted 306 pounds at the Combine. Because of short arms, Buggs easily could be a better fit as a 3 Technique DT in an attacking Defense. Very good college player, with great intangibles.
Zach Allen would be a very good fit for the Lions. I would be comfortable with him at the # 43 spot in Round 2, though better yet, the Lions would get him lower in the round. Having said this, the Lions have a much greater need in the short term for an edge pass rusher.
Chase Winovich could provide DE / OLB versatility. He probably be taken from the middle of the 2nd to middle of the 3rd Round. Another player that brings the intangible element.
Regarding Clelin Ferrell, he could realistically get drafted anywhere from pick # 4 to pick # 20. I think he has many similarities to Trey Flowers. The Lions have a much greater need for an edge player with differential speed and quickness.
Jaylon Ferguson has probably a 40 % to 45 % chance of being available at pick # 43. Very gifted prospect, who needs to be more consistent. I'm not sure if he has enough of the football character dimension that Matt Patricia is seeking.

Detroit Lions 2019 NFL Draft profile: Michigan DE Rashan Gary
………………….
The Lions very likely pass on Rashan Gary with pick # 8 and even if he's available after a trade down. Gary, despite his vast physical talent, hasn't produced enough tangible results. His lack of consistency makes him far too risky in the first half of Round 1.
