Trey Flowers is arguably the best UFA who wasn't tagged this year. Flowers is a versatile and complete Defensive Lineman. The Patriots moved him all over the Defensive Line. This created some pass rush mismatches inside in expected passing situations. Much like Danny Amendola and Justin Coleman, Flowers' intangibles are a huge plus. The same with his experience in New England. Patricia knows Flowers and vice versa very well. The transition to the Lions for Flowers should be relatively easy.


Having said all of this, the Lions had to overpay to land Flowers. He has good natural ability but not close to the ability of Ziggy Ansah. Flowers depends greatly on effort, technique, and preparation. Much like Justin Coleman, the sum of Flowers is greater than the parts. Very good addition at an even higher cost.

LOVE this signing; even at the very high price tag. Trey Flowers brings so much to the Lions. The other defensive lineman should take every advantage to learn from Trey Flowers, on and off the field.

The less than $6.5 million salary cap charge for 2019 provides the Lions with a huge amount of salary cap flexibility for the 2019 season.

Matt Patricia is tough to play for. And Trey Flowers loves it.

The Lions are paying Trey Flowers for much more than his on the field play. Flowers should help sell Matt Patricia's program to many players that have doubts. Including some free agents that have never played for the Lions or been a part of the 'Patriot Way'.

Trey Flowers has played well overall the last 3 games. He's trending upward. Flowers probably will never be amongst the NFL Sack Leaders season after season. Yet, his all around player and ability to effect plays positively even if it doesn't show up with his stats, is a huge positive for the Lions.

Trey Flowers sees the big picture. His time with tbe Patriots, a team that overcomed adversity to win 2 Super Bowls and get to another Super Bowl during Flowers' 4 seasons with the team, should help the Lions moving forward.

As much as the Lions could miss Trey Flowers today on the road against the Redskins, there's no question that in order to land him, the Lions had to overpay him. Whether that was a good decision, time will tell. Yet, the Lions still need a differential edge rusher.
