Don't expect the Lions starters to play in the preseason finale vs. the Panthers

If Dan Campbell decides not to play starters and even some backups at Carolina in the pre-season finale for the teams, I would be comfortable with the decision. In addition to the risk of injuries in the pre-season game, the Lions host the Panthers in October. Even if the Lions would play all relatively healthy starters and key backups at Carolina on Friday Night, the play calls would likely be very vanilla.

This is welcome news. It's a good opportunity for the Lions to evaluate players on the roster bubble against better competition. The type of competition they would be facing in the regular season, if called upon in meaningful game action.

The Lions brass assessment of the upside of Chase Cota will probably go along way in whether he survives the Lions cutdown to 53.

Darrell Daniels could end up beating out Jason Cabinda for a roster spot. Going into tonight's pre-season game, it's probably Cabinda's job to lose. It's possible, not probable that both players will be on the Lions 53 man roster.


The last 1 to 3 Offensive Line initial 53 man roster spots will likely come down to Germain Ifedi, Matt Nelson, Kayode Awosika, and Bobby Hart. With Ifedi and/ or Nelson surviving the cutdown to 53.


I don't think Nate Sudfeld warrants a spot on the Lions 53 man roster. But the fact that the Lions are the team that proposed the extra QB on the Game Day roster is the reason why I currently believe the Lions are leaning towards Sudfeld being on the Lions 53 man initial roster and opening day roster.
