The Lions releasing Logan Steinberg this summer isn't surprising. It was more of a question of whether the Lions would release Stenberg sometime after the final pre-season game at Carolina, but before the deadline of when the Lions had to send in the cutdown to 53 transactions to the NFL. The other possibilities were the Lions releasing Stenberg much earlier, which turned out to be the case, or if the Lions would be able to get a late round conditional trade offer for Stenberg. The latter seemed unlikely, with Stenberg at or near the bottom of the Lions interior Offensive Line pecking order.
With Stenberg not demonstrating that he can handle a backup Center role, his lack of versatility was a major roadblock for Stenberg to be on the Lions opening day roster. The improvement Stenberg demonstrated in the pre-season last summer didn't carry over to the early part of the regular season, when Stenberg was an injury replacement in the Lions starting lineup. It's best for both parties to go in a different direction. I think it's a close call whether Stenberg is claimed off waivers.
