Lions draft profile: Max Duggan, QB, TCU
.........
This new thread relates to the following thread:
Lions have Picks # 6 and # 18 in the 2023 NFL Draft
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1681/lions-picks-2023-nfl-draft
I would be more than comfortable under most draft scenarios if the Lions select Max Duggan as early as Pick # 154 in Round 5, providing the Lions don't draft a QB earlier in the 2023 Draft. The Lions also have two 6th Round Picks, # 183 and # 194.
If the Lions end up drafting Max Duggan, there's a very realistic chance that it will be necessary for the Lions to carry 3 QBs on the 53 man roster in the 2023 season. With Duggan being the Lions # 3 QB. With the hope that Duggan would demonstrate that he's capable of being at least a decent # 2 QB for the Lions in the 2024 season.

Lions meet with QB Aidan O'Connell after Purdue's pro day
.........
Aidan O'Connell has good intangibles, with more than enough height (6'3") for the latter not to be an issue (He weights 213). Notable downside with O'Connell as an NFL QB prospect is he doesn't have a strong QB and he has limited mobility. O'Connell will be 25 as a rookie. Being that O'Connell very likely isn't a long term starting option, his older age isn't a concern on this end.
My guess is O'Connell will be drafted somewhere from Round 4 to Round 6. I hope the Lions go in another direction, as a rookie QB with more upside is preferable.

Lions 2023 NFL draft: A quarterback for every round
...........
Of these 7 options, Max Duggan in Round 7 is the option I prefer the most for the Lions. To the extent that Duggan would likely be one of the Lions best 5th Round options with Pick # 154, if the Lions don't select a QB earlier in the draft.

Lions 2023 draft preview: Set at quarterback for now, Detroit could invest in future
............
I think the Lions short term need at QB is a little greater than 2 out of 10, because Nate Sudfeld isn't a good option, if called upon to play.
Hendon Hooker, who the Lions brought in for a Pre-Draft visit this week, probably won't last to Pick # 48, the Lions first of two current picks in Round 2. I hope the Lions don't take him with Pick # 18, if available. Hunter is already 25, is coming off a torn ACL, and needs plenty of developmental work.
If the Lions don't end up with one of the top 5 QBs expected to be taken in the 1st or 2nd Round, it's best to wait until Day 3 of the Draft to address the QB situation.

2023 NFL draft: Quarterback question looms large over future of Detroit Lions
........
This article was written before Jamison Williams was suspended by the NFL for 6 games for violating the NFL Gambling Policy.
While I'm skeptical that CJ Stroud will last to pick # 6, there has been plenty of speculation that Stroud could be available when the Lions are scheduled to be on the clock with Pick # 6.
Jake Haefer is undersized (5'11 1/2", 207) for an NFL QB, who doesn't have a strong arm. Haefer has very good intangibles but his absolutely ceiling appears to be an above average # 2 QB (which isn't likely). Haefer will probably be drafted in Round 4 to 6. I think it's more likely than not Haefer will be drafted before the Lions are scheduled to be on the clock with Pick # 152, in Round 5. My preference is the Lions don't draft him, as his upside appears to be too limited.

NFL draft preview: Time for Detroit Lions to make backup QB decision beyond Jared Goff
..........
It's not far-fetched that 5 QBs will be drafted in the top 11 of the draft. The range Hendon Hooker could be drafted in is probably from Pick # 11 through the entire Middle of Round 2.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson would provide the benefit of the Lions having a QB with high caliber speed and movement skills to help in practice prepare for opposing QBs with those skills. His upside is probably as an above average # 2 QB but he's a long way from being at that level. The chances of Thompson reaching that level are well below 50 %. The 5th Round is the earliest I hope the Lions even consider Thompson-Robinson. With the 6th Round more reflective of his skill set/ potential, combined with his below average size (6-1 1/2".203 at the Combine).
