GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Dan Campbell said the 2022 Detroit Lions would be the team that can, and will. Then they went on to become the team that did, and has.
They did find their way back from the dead.
That has sparked hope that maybe, just maybe, the power dynamics in the NFC North are finally changing in their favor after a 30-year drought.
They didn’t make the playoffs with their 20-16 win on Sunday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers, thanks to another ghost from the Quinntricia regime. Former Lions safety Quandre Diggs picked off an overtime pass that led to a winning field goal for Seattle earlier in the day, ending Detroit’s playoff chances before they even had a chance to lace up their cleats at Lambeau Field.
But with nothing left to play for but to spoil Green Bay’s season, they beat a Packers team that just needed a win to clinch a playoff berth. They talked smack against Aaron Rodgers all week, upset at his perceived lack of respect for their team and this comeback, and then backed up their tough talk with a second straight outstanding defensive performance in the series, and a season sweep of the longtime kings of the North.
The Lions finished by winning eight times in their last 10 games, a stretch that was bookended by wins against a Green Bay team that fell just one game short of the postseason. Although that ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome their league-worst 1-6 start, the Lions still managed to finish 9-8, giving them their first winning season since Jim Caldwell was still their coach all the way back in 2017.
**** Tremendous job by the Lions in closing the season out with a hard-fought road win in Green Bay, that eliminated the Packers from the playoffs. The Seahawks OT win over the LA Rams was very disappointing and aggravating, as this was one of the worst officiated NFL games I've seen in a while. With the Seahawks being on the favorable end of most of the bad officiating calls. Then on top of this, Quandre Diggs makes the play in OT that set the stage for the Lions to be eliminated from the playoffs not long afterwards.
The Lions played with purpose, passion, and determination in Green Bay. The Lions approached this game like a playoff game. All 3 units contributed greatly to the Lions beating the Packers. The Lions earned a winning record for the season. It's the only time the Lions have been above .500 since the early part of the 2019 season. Ironically, the last second loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field in Game # 5 in the 2019 season, in which officiating contributed greatly to the Lions loss, was the game that began the Lions streak of being at .500 or below (which was the case the vast majority of the time) until last night's game was complete. ****
They broke their streak of four straight last-place finishes by climbing to second place in the North, trailing only the champion Minnesota Vikings, a team they also beat during their stunning second-half comeback. Detroit finished 5-1 against the division overall.
**** This is also the first time since the 2017 season the Lions had a winning record vs. NFC North Opponents. ****
And make no mistake, with almost every meaningful starter still under contract, a whole lot of money to spend, plus at least five picks in the first three rounds in the upcoming draft, two of which are in the first round -- and one of which is at No. 6 -- unseating Minnesota and everyone else will be the expectation going into 2023.
**** Winning the NFC North and advancing in the playoffs should be the expectation in the 2023 season but it won't be easy. Playing with much higher expectations can be more difficult than when expectations are low.
The Lions salary cap situation is better than it's been in 2021 and 2022. Yet, it's not a great salary cap situation like the Bears have or even close to that. Some difficult financial decisions by Bead Holmes and Dan Campbell will be necessary.****
Running back Jamaal Williams, a Packers castoff last year, was instrumental in the comeback victory. One play after Kalif Raymond caught a 43-yard pass at the goal line, Williams pounded the ball across the goal line for a 13-9 lead in the third quarter. That was his 16th touchdown run of the season, matching Barry Sanders’ club record.
Then after the Packers took the lead back thanks to more shoddy play from Amani Oruwariye -- in for the injured Jeff Okudah and Mike Hughes -- Williams pounded the ball back across the goal line for a 20-16 lead. That capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive that ate up more than half the clock in the fourth quarter.
****Jaamal Williams deservedly earned a Game Ball last night, which Dan Campbell presented to him. Williams' leadership by itself is invaluable. His physical play and decision making on the field contributed greatly to the win. ****
Green Bay just kept coming, as Green Bay is wont to do. But this time, just like the last time, Detroit just kept coming back at Rodgers, with rookie Kerby Joseph picking him off for the third time this season. The Lions were then able to drain everything that remained on the clock, thanks to a gutsy decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 rather than kick a field goal that would have stretched the lead to seven, but left about 1 minute on the clock. DJ Chark caught that fourth-down pass, plus another earlier in the quarter, to cap a really nice second-half finish.
****If Aaron Rodgers retires this off-season, Kerby Joseph will be a prime reason why. If not for Joseph, Rodgers' season would very likely be continuing. Strong all-around performance by Joseph, who continues to provide great ball skills.
The decision to go for the 1st Down on 4th and close to 2 yards was the right one. The Lions couldn't risk kicking off with dynamic Packers Kickoff Returner Keisean Nixon wearing the Green and Gold. With 1:15 remaining in the game and the Packers having no timeouts remaining, an incomplete pass would have given the Packers the ball at their own 15 yd line. Even if the Lions playoff hopes were still alive, going for the 1st Down in that situation was clearly the right decision. Great play call by Ben Johnson and execution by the Lions Offense to secure the victory and a winning record for the 2022 season. ****
****
With that, yet another season has ended in the regular-season finale. Only this time, you can’t help but feel like something better is on the horizon. The knife to the back of Green Bay’s season isn’t such a bad consolation, either.
**** Any time the Lions beat the Packers is a great outcome. That much more in prime time at Lambeau Field, with the Packers season on the line. ****
One last time, let’s get to some more instant observations:
-- Quarterback Jared Goff will open next season riding a remarkable streak of 324 straight passes without an interception. That’s already the fifth-longest streak in NFL history, trailing only Aaron Rodgers (402 in 2018) Tom Brady (399 last year and 358 in 2010-11) and Derek Carr (332 in 2018). Not bad for a guy who has always struggled with ball security, even in some of his better years. It was definitely one of the reasons the Rams were so eager to trade him for Matthew Stafford, they threw three draft picks into the deal, including two first-rounders.
L.A. went on to win the Super Bowl with Stafford last year, so they’re already playing with house money. But the Lions have won their side of that trade more than anyone could have imagined. They got two first-round picks, one of which already turned into Jameson Williams after some further dealing, the other of which will land at No. 6 in the upcoming draft. That’s a huge return for taking on Goff and that contract -- and now Goff is playing like one of the top quarterbacks in the league. It remains unknown what Detroit’s intentions are at the quarterback position heading into the offseason, but there’s no disputing that he’s been good enough to offer unexpected flexibility at that position, in addition to all the draft capital Detroit also acquired in the deal. This rebuild is so much further along thanks to Brad Holmes’ first blockbuster deal.
**** As much as I didn't want the LA Rams to win the 2021 season Super Bowl, which among other things dropped the Rams 1st Round Pick, which the Lions owned, to Pick # 32, the Rams winning the Super Bowl very likely ended up helping the Lions. The Rams didn't have the urgency to win the Super Bowl again, including making one or more trades that would have helped their chances of reaching the playoffs. The trade helped the Rams win the Super Bowl but it also helped the Lions be in much better position moving forward. ****
-- Mike Hughes earned the start for Jeff Okudah, who did not dress for the game because of an elbow injury that popped up at the end of the practice week. Then Hughes left the game after suffering an elbow injury of his own in the third quarter, forcing deposed starter Amani Oruwariye into the game. Then Amani Oruwariye promptly reminded everyone why he’s a deposed starter, allowing a bomb to Christian Watson despite drawing a flag for basically tackling him on the play. Aaron Rodgers pumped in his first touchdown pass of the day two plays later, and Green Bay wrestled back the lead 16-13 late in the third quarter.
It’s hard to figure out Oruwariye’s precipitous decline from CB1 last year to getting run off the field in the first month of the season. The nadir was a nine-catch, six-penalty fiasco in Minnesota. By November, he was on the bench for good. By January, you were begging him to be back there again. By the time his contract expires on March 15, there’s just no way he’s back on this team.
**** I mentioned in the Game Preview thread my concern about the realistic possibility of the Lions being in a bind at CB if one or more additional injuries at the position occurred in the game. This ended up happening. Thankfully, the Lions overcame the adversity.
It would be shocking on this end if Amani Oruwariye is back with the Lions, unless it's a veteran minimum contract. Even with the latter, it's still highly likely both parties will be going in different directions. ****
-- John Cominksy has done it again, wrapping up a breakout season by poking out a crucial fumble just before halftime. Green Bay was deep in Lions territory looking to add to a 9-3 lead. Instead, Detroit had just enough time to drive back the other way for a field goal that trimmed the deficit to 9-6 as time expired. In a game where scoring was at a premium, that was a huge play in a season full of them for Cominsky. He has been a huge hit since being claimed off waivers from Atlanta over the summer, racking up a career-high four sacks while finishing second on the team in quarterback pressures. The only bad news: He just played the final game on his contract. Look for Detroit to prioritize bringing him back next season, because while the rookies draw all the headlines, that front wouldn’t be nearly as good without “The Commish.”
****Agreed. Other than a Hands to the Face penalty in the 3rd QTR, that gave the Packers a 1st Down after they were in a 1st and 20 situation (LT David Bakhtiari was called for Holding on James Houston.), which negated an Interception by Kerby Joseph, I thought John Cominsky was one of the most positive impactful players on the Lions in this game. ****
-- That being said, Cominsky was among a handful of Lions players who committed game-changing penalties, getting flagged for a hands to the face penalty that wiped out a third-quarter interception by Kerby Joseph. Jerry Jacobs was flagged for a pass interference that went for 45 yards and led to Green Bay’s first score, while offensive lineman Matt Nelson was flagged for a holding call that wiped out a 66-yard touchdown catch by Jameson Williams.
**** Matt Nelson had an injury plagued season, in which he wasn't as effective as an extra Offensive Lineman as was the case in the 2021 season. One thing the Lions need to address in the Off-Season is better depth at Offensive Tackle. Thankfully, Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell were available each game in the 2022 season. They were iron men. The Lions might not be as fortunate next season. ****
-- Jamaal Williams ran for 72 yards on 16 carries in his return to Lambeau Field, giving him his first 1,000-yard season on the first NFL field he called home. The split wasn’t exactly amicable, so there was some measure of satisfaction for Williams hitting 1,000 back here. He becomes the seventh player in franchise history to achieve the feat, joining Reggie Bush (2013), Kevin Jones (2004), James Stewart (2000, 2002), Barry Sanders (1989-98), Billy Sims (1980-81, 1983) and Steve Owens (1971). He also gets a $250,000 bonus.
**** A well earned bonus!!!****
With that, Williams’ contract has expired. The Lions now have some hard decisions to make in their offensive backfield. Williams has lapped D’Andre Swift as RB1, but turns 28 next offseason. They can’t afford to lose Williams, but have to mind how much they pay him too. And after this kind of production, Williams could be looking to get paid. With Swift entering a contract season next year -- and Detroit unconvinced he’ll ever turn into a reliable RB1 -- there are short- and long-term concerns to mull in the coming weeks.
**** The RB unit is a prime example of difficult decisions that need to be made by Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell. At the very least, the Lions need to draft a RB who has the potential to be a major contributor even as a rookie. ****
-- Kalif Raymond has been an unsung star all season. Now he’s about to be rewarded for it, earning a $250,000 bonus for racking up more than 600 yards on the season. He needed 50 yards to get there, then finished with 66 yards on four catches. He also had the biggest of the night, a 43-yarder at the goal line that set up Detroit’s first touchdown and a 13-9 lead in the third quarter.
**** Kalif Raymond certainly earned the bonus. Raymond was the Lions most durable WR this season, who began the season on the 53 man roster. Raymond's reliability fielding punts in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, as well as his production as a Punt Returner, by itself provided the value of Raymond's contracts in these two seasons. This, combined with his contributions on Offense (including as a blocker, despite his immense size limitations), likely will result in Raymond being in the Lions 2023 plans. Raymond is under contract for the 2023 season. However, at a high salary cap number. ****
