Lions training camp position preview: Tight end

Lions Tight Ends situation ( 2021 season )

With James Mitchell cleared for the beginning of training camp, it's likely that one TE spot is up for grabs for the early part of the 2022 Regular Season.
T.J. Hockenson will start, as long as he's relatively healthy. James Mitchell has a good to very good chance of being on the Lions opening day roster. In addition to a likely 3rd TE on the roster early in the season, I think the Lions will sign one or two TEs to the Practice Squad.

Lions trade TE T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings
detroit-lions-forum.proboards.com/thread/1596/lions-trade-te-hockenson-vikings
The Lions are 6-2 since the trade of T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings, including a win over the Vikings. The Vikings only lost 2 games since the trade. This is a situation in which both teams benefitted from a trade. It's opened up more opportunities for the Lions other TEs. Players, that will cost the Lions far less under the NFL salary cap than Hockenson would have beyond the 2022 season. While a case can be made that Brad Holmes should have insisted more a better trade compensation package from the Vikings, moving on from Hockenson has already worked out well for the Lions.
